KDYŽ LIDÉ NECHODÍ DO KOSTELA, PŘIJDE KOSTEL K NIM.

I PŘES OBTÍŽE VZNIKLO V BURUNDI 9 SBORŮ
Misijní práce v Burundi pokračuje i přes obtíže s dopravou a vybavením.

Dnes stojí Cali v čele vzniku takto nově a přirozeně zakládaných sborů,“ říká Salcedo.

Vyučuje Biblické základy, učí děti verše z Bible, zpívá s nimi a rozdává dobrou zprávu evangelia.

Evangelická misijní organizace potřebuje lidi a prostředky, aby mohla pokrýt rostoucí možnosti šíření evangelia.

Většina amerických pastorů předpokládá, že alternativní náboženství a New Age bude mít v příštím desetiletí větší vliv.

Uvažovali čtyři možné důvody: (1) Americkou vojenskou moc a výzbroj, (2) její demokratický politický systém, (3) kapitalistický systém zaměřený na plnění hmotných potřeb spotřebitelů, (4) typ kulturního prostředí v USA.

Pokud nebudeme schopni postihnout roli náboženské víry v motivaci a jednání teroristů, nebudeme schopni zvýšit naši bezpečnost.“ Dokument sumarizuje 17 principů, které řeší teroristické aktivity, povinnosti státu, a zodpovědnost náboženských komunit a jednotlivých věřících.

Manžel oběti, Brit Gary Weatherall, vydal prohlášení přes sbor Christian and Missionary Alliance, kde řekl, „Má žena zemřela, protože milovala církev a protože ráda pomáhala lidem v Sidonu a Libanonu.“ Podle sdělení zástupců sboru pracovala Bonnie Weatherall jako dobrovolnice na klinice déle než rok.  „KRABICE LÁSKY“ ROZJASNÍ DEN DÍKŮVZDÁNÍ V CHUDÝCH RODINÁCH.
(Mission Network News) – Američtí křesťané jsou nabádáni, aby pomáhali potřebným u příležitosti amerického svátku Dne Díkůvzdání. Ted Gandy, národní ředitel newyorské misijní organizace Life Inner City tento program nazval “Krabice Lásky”.

COLOMBIAN ARMY RESCUES CAPTURED BISHOP, PRIEST

Soldiers rescued a kidnapped Colombian bishop Friday after a battle with the rebels who were holding him, an army spokeswoman said. Bishop Jorge Enrique Jiménez, president of Latin American Bishops Conference, was unharmed. The army killed one insurgent and captured another in the clash north of the capital, said Sandra Gómez of the Colombian army's Fifth Brigade. "It is a great success for the army," Defense Minister Martha Lucía Ramírez told reporters in Bogota in confirming the rescue. It happened near the village of El Penol, 35 miles north of the capital. Catholic priest Desiderio Orjuela, who was kidnapped Monday along with Jiménez, was also freed. Pope John Paul II and other clerics had appealed for the release of the priests. The military has blamed the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for the clerics' abductions. The rebel group holds dozens of kidnapped politicians, including former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and a state governor as well as soldiers, police and ordinary civilians. More than 3,000 people were taken hostage in Colombia last year alone. (Associated Press)

OFFICIALS IN NORTHERN NIGERIAN STATES DEMOLISH, SEIZE CHURCHES

State officials in the northern Nigerian state of Borno have demolished churches in the capital city of Maiduguri and plan to demolish more, claiming that the buildings infringe on city development ordinances. Christian leaders said that the demolitions were part of a "phased plan to prevent churches from acquiring land and erecting buildings." In another development, Muslim officials in Zamfara state forcefully assumed control of a convent belonging to the Nigerian Catholic church in the state capital of Gusau. The officials erected structures on the land and refused to vacate it. Church leaders staging a protest march in Gusau were arrested by police, then quickly released when officials realized the arrests could spark a violent confrontation between Muslims and Christians in the city. Franca Igweilo, head of the seized convent, said that since the introduction of sharia (Islamic law), the government of Zamfara state has trampled on the rights of Christians. (Compass)

CHRISTIANS 'LIVING IN TERROR' IN WESTERN INDIAN STATE

The Indian National Human Rights Commission is being urged to take immediate steps to help safeguard Christians in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. "The rights of the Christian community have been violated," said Kavita Srivastava of the People's Union for Civil Liberties which has petitioned India's human rights commission on behalf of Christians. "They have been forced to live in terror." The union and a dozen other rights groups released a report on the situation faced by Christians in the state's Ajmer district. The problems began after a Catholic priest was accused of molesting a Christian boy at St. Martin School at Bhawani Kheda. Some Hindu groups used the incident to "run a hate campaign" against the state's tiny Christian community. "The accusation against the priest should have been treated like any other criminal allegations," Srivastava said. "Instead, the event was used to terrorize the local Christian population, tarnish the image of the institutions run by them for decades, and pressure Christian families to reconvert to Hinduism." Roman Catholic Bishop Ignatius Menezes of the Ajmer-Jaipur diocese said, "Our people are under great pressure to reconvert. Christian families that have refused to sign a declaration of reconversion cannot enter some Hindu shops or even buy vegetables. We are living in fear." (Episcopal News Service)

AZERBAIJANI CHURCH AGAIN REFUSED OK TO IMPORT SCRIPTURES

For the third time, the Baptist church in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku has been refused permission to import 3,000 copies of the Book of Proverbs in Azeri which are being held in customs. Pastor Ilya Zenchenko, head of the Baptist Union in Azerbaijan, said that Rafik Aliev, chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations was responsible for the latest refusal. Zenchenko fears that the State Committee may use the incident as a pretext to close down the Baptist church on grounds of "infringement of the law about the reception of religious literature." HIV CHILDREN'S MINISTRY IN ROMANIA EXPANDS TO PARENTS

In Romania, a ministry to children infected with HIV/AIDS is having an impact on both children and their parents. Greater Europe Mission's Andy LeBreche works in Timisoara, Romania, and says just after the revolution funding to hospitals dried up. "Because of budget constraints they began to reuse needles and equipment -- scalpels not sterilized well. And so, there was a whole slew of people about 10 years ago that all contracted HIV, and of course now it's full blown AIDS, and a lot of people are dying from that." From that problem was born a ministry to HIV/AIDS patients, specifically children with the disease. LeBreche explains, "One of our Romanian colleagues has been granted access to two of the hospitals in towns that have AIDS wards. She teaches them Bible lessons, Bible verses, sings songs with them and shares the gospel. And, in the past few months she's realized that she has a growing ministry to the parents. She has begun counseling with some of the parents and sharing the gospel with them." [HCJB World Radio broadcasts the gospel locally in six Romanian cities via the Radio Voice of the Gospel network, a cooperative effort with the Evangelical Alliance of Romania and the Romanian Missionary Society. A seventh station in Brasov is expected to go on the air soon.] (Mission Network News)

'IF THE PEOPLE DON'T GO TO CHURCH, WE'LL TAKE CHURCH TO THEM'

"Many French people would never visit a church service, or even watch the Jesus Film in a cinema," says Sam Catoe, an American missionary in Paris. He decided to distribute leaflets offering to lend the Jesus Film to people in his neighborhood, thus establishing a personal contact. He was more than surprised to receive a mountain of requests. French-speaking volunteers delivered the films, and every person who reacted positively to the film was asked whether they would be willing to organize a meeting of people in their block who had also seen the film. Many were willing, so 19 house groups were quickly started, a number which has now grown to 60. The participants are most moved by what the Bible says about Jesus. "Very few of them have ever visited a church," says Catoe. (Friday Fax)

Three Christians have been executed by lethal injection amidst a massive crackdown by the Vietnamese authorities against the Montagnard Christians of the Central Highlands, according to the human rights group, the Montagnard Foundation. The Montagnards are the indigenous hilltribes people of the country and have a different culture and language from the majority ethnic Vietnamese. On October 29, 2002 the Vietnamese Security Forces (Cong An) executed by lethal injection in their prison cells three Montagnard Christians from the Central Highlands. These summary executions are just one aspect of the massive crackdown against Christians in Vietnam. The brunt of this crackdown is being borne by ethnic minority hilltribes such as the Montagnard Christians of the Central Highlands and by the Hmong tribal Christians. At least 20 Hmong Christian leaders are known by the British human rights group, Jubilee Campaign, to have been arrested. By the end of September this year, 354 of 412 churches had been forcibly disbanded in Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands alone. By mid-October, about 50 Christians pastors and church elders in this province had been arrested or had "disappeared." It is expected that the remaining 58 churches in the province will soon be shut down. Local Dak Lak television is reported to have broadcast "Ceremonies of Voluntarily Renouncing Christianity" and has shown pictures of Christians "voluntarily" giving their Bibles and songbooks up to be burned. SECRET TRAINING PROGRAMS HELP CHURCHES GROW IN VIETNAM

"In 1975, when the Communists came to power in Vietnam, church activities were censored, and completely forbidden in some areas," reports a Vietnamese church leader. "We began to teach new believers in secret Bible study groups, to strengthen their faith and prepared to endure persecution. When we started offering training programs for Christians, we started to see rapid church growth. Every Bible school in the region had been closed, so we needed an alternative, so started teaching centers. The participants in the training courses themselves trained hundreds of people in their own churches. Many new churches were planted that way -- 83 in my region alone, with 8,020 members. The new churches were unable to obtain permission to build a place to meet, so met in people's homes. In some places, they had to change their meeting place regularly to avoid police repression or arrest." (Friday Fax)

CHURCHES EXPAND IN COLOMBIA BY LEAVING WALLS BEHIND

"A true transformation is taking place in Cali, starting with the church itself!" reports Berna Salcedo, a member of the Dawn Ministries staff in Colombia. "Christians in the city are spreading literally explosively by leaving their walls behind them. Statistics show that some 60 percent of the city's 2 million inhabitants live in poverty. Necessity is the mother of invention, particularly in difficult times, and Christian churches are springing up in all sorts of places and in all forms. In Cali, people no longer ask 'what is a church?' but 'what is actually not a church?' That overcomes the greatest obstacle to church planting in South America, that a church is equated with a church building. We tell them 'the church is the people,' so a church can be anywhere where people are. It is astonishing to see the potential released once people realize this. Today, Cali is at the forefront of planting socially relevant churches," says Salcedo. "Targeted studies brought more and more of the city's pastors to the conclusion that traditional models of church don't really work in difficult social settings. Christians recognizing their social context means that a growing number of churches are planted where the people really are. The trend is clearly in the direction of house churches, cell churches and so-called 'marketplace' churches; in poor neighbourhoods, social and communal facilities are becoming Christian churches. Ironically, the threat from the guerillas is a significant factor encouraging this change," he says. "Cali lies at the foot of the mountains in which the guerillas hide out. In the past, the guerillas have kidnapped entire churches, so it is no longer advisable or practical to erect church buildings -- the people simply do not come. This also emphasizes the relevance of house churches: the well-off inhabitants of prosperous neighborhoods need little convincing to meet as a church in their houses in discreet and safe places. The poor are attracted to house churches and fellowships in social centers, where their practical needs are taken care of." (Dawn Ministries)

9 CHURCHES PLANTED IN BURUNDI DESPITE DIFFICULTIES

A mission work in Burundi is making steady progress despite lack of transportation and facilities. Andrew Nzaniye, director of Evangelical Ministries of Central Africa, said that showing the "Jesus" film is bringing the gospel to people who are rejoicing in the good news. "Our film teams are climbing mountains and carrying generators and projectors on their heads," Nzaniye said. "They reach places where people have never seen a car or a motorcycle. The people they witness to are so much excited by the new life they find in Jesus Christ," he said. So far, nine churches have been planted. Walls of the meeting halls have been constructed and now await funds to provide the roofing. Nzaniye was pleased with the progress, considering that the teams lack means of transportation. Each team, he said, needs two bicycles. (Missions Insider)

SEND INTERNATIONAL APPEALS FOR WORKERS

An evangelical mission organization needs people and resources to help meet growing opportunities to share the gospel. Send International's Frank Severn says his organization is growing, but not fast enough. "When I look at the list of needs we may have more than 120 positions that we would like to fill. And, we've seen this last year 35 to 40 people come. We have a lot of opportunity for people who are willing to teach English as a second language, for evangelists and church planters, theological education, Christian education, business manger, pilots, school teachers."(Mission Network News)

COURT ORDERS 10 COMMANDMENTS DISPLAY REMOVED

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore has 30 days to remove a 5,300-pound granite monument of the Ten Commandments from the rotunda of the state judicial building, after a federal judge ruled the monument violates the constitution's ban on government promotion of religion. In a ruling handed down Nov. 18, U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson said he does not believe all Ten Commandments displays in government buildings are illegal, but that the monument in the judicial building crosses the line "between the permissible and the impermissible." The monument features the King James Bible version of the Ten Commandments sitting on top of a granite block. Around the monument are quotes from historical figures and documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, but critics contend the commandments dominate. (Baptist Press)

   PERSECUTION DECLINING IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO

When the Tzotzil-speaking people of Chiapas, Mexico, began coming to Christ in the 1960s, opposition from religious traditionalists surged. Tribal chiefs assaulted Christians and destroyed their homes. A few evangelicals suffered martyrdom. Thirty years later, some 25,000 Tzotzils live in exile. However, an underground church formed in the province of San Juan Chamula, heart of traditionalist Tzotzil religion, and today half the population of some villages is evangelical. Two years have passed since the last major attack against Christians. Chiapas-based missionary Vern Sterk credits the decrease in persecution to greater cooperation among local churches, pressure from international groups and improved state government under Pablo Salazar, the first evangelical governor in Mexican history. TECHNICAL CONFERENCE BRINGS TRANSLATORS TOGETHER

A special conference is under way that will help clear the path for the spread of the gospel around the world. JAARS, which speeds Bible translation for Wycliffe Bible Translators and others, is hosting Wycliffe's Computer Technical Conference. Wycliffe's Brian Chapaitis, who helped organize it, said, "Technology moves so fast that we need to bring these people back from the field so that they can get a cross pollination of ideas. Many of them are working on similar tasks, but they're so isolated that they don't know what their neighbors are doing. This is an opportunity also to train many." Chapaitis said these types of conferences will help with their Vision 2025 plan. "We would like to see a start of the Bible translation process in all of the remaining languages of the world. That's a God-sized task. If you would like a career in Bible translation, no matter what your skill, we can use you." There are 3,000 languages still without Scripture. (Mission Network News)

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM CALLED KEY TO SECURE, STABLE SOCIETY

Top experts in religious freedom confronted issues raised by national security concerns and terrorism and issued a preliminary statement emphasizing how respect for religious freedom was essential for security and a stable society. Meeting in Washington, D.C. Nov. 15-17, the board of experts of the International Religious Liberty Association examined the terrorist situation and the response of the national security community. In reacting to terrorist threats, states have sometimes infringed on freedom of religion and conscience causing counter productive results, the experts concluded. "Respecting freedom of religion is often a more effective tool in winning loyalty of citizens and in achieving peace than weapons and coercive measure," the statement affirms. "Responses to terrorism and security threats must take these dimensions of religions seriously," since "failure to grasp the role that religious beliefs are playing in motivating terrorist activities will result in reduced security." The document sets out a list of 17 principles that deal with terrorist activities, duties of the state, and the responsibilities of religious believers and communities. These include statements that "religion should never serve as a justification for hatred, disrespect of others, or criminal violence; indiscriminate violence, threats and other acts of terrorism cannot be justified under international law; and security should not become the ultimate value of a society, even under the threat of terrorism. STUDY: PASTORS PESSIMISTIC ABOUT FUTURE OF CHRISTIANITY IN U.S.

A large majority of pastors predict that alternative religions and New Age spirituality will become more influential in the next decade. A recent study conducted by Ellison Research of Phoenix indicated that 82 percent of ministers expect a growing influence of non-Christian faiths and 55 percent think New Age spirituality will increase in impact in the next 10 years, the Associated Press reported. The alarming findings of a survey of Methodists, Lutherans, Baptists and Pentecostal/charismatic ministers show that many pastors are not upbeat about the future of Christianity in America. The 567 pastors polled by the Arizona organization were at their most pessimistic when asked about "overall freedom of religion in the U.S.," with 44 percent anticipating declining freedom of religion. In addition, 41 percent predict decreasing influence of Christianity in Americans' daily lives in 2012 than it is in 2002. Pastors were even less likely to feel there will be a rise in "the influence of Christianity in national politics" with only 9 percent predicting increased Christian influence in that arena. THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY A PRIME TIME TO SHARE GOSPEL

An evangelical ministry is encouraging Americans to use the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday to lead people to Christ. The American Tract Society says since Thanksgiving is a time to focus on God, many people are already prepared to hear the gospel. To help in that effort, ATS has a Thanksgiving tract which describes how faith had a hand in America's history, and also tells the reader how important it is to have their own personal faith in Christ. Go to http://atstracts.org/ to get this tract. (Mission Network News)

MAGAZINE FEATURES PASTOR'S PURPOSE-DRIVEN APPROACH

Rick Warren appears on the cover of the Nov. 18 issue of "Christianity Today" above a headline stating he may be the most influential pastor in the country. The magazine's seven-page spread cites the influence of Warren's "Purpose Driven" model, one that is used in churches around the globe. And it suggests that Warren's "regular guy" approach is not only non-threatening to pastors, it helps them to see the obvious. "If Rick Warren is a Regular-Guy pastor, Purpose-Driven is a regular-church approach -- easy to miss because it seems so ordinary," writes Tim Stafford in the CT article. "Purpose-Driven is built around five fundamental purposes -- fellowship, spiritual maturity, service, evangelism and worship -- which just about any church, large or small, Pentecostal or Episcopal, can get behind." Warren has trained approximately 180,000 pastors through his "Purpose-Driven Church" seminars, and his book of the same name has been a best-seller since its release in 1995. Warren is pastor of Saddleback Valley Community Church in Lake Forest, Calif. Warren and his wife, Kay, started Saddleback 22 years ago with a handful of people in the living room of their rented condominium. "He cares about world missions, pouring money into making Purpose-Driven resources available in the Third World," Stafford continues. "And most of all he cares about soul winning." (Baptist Press)

AMERICAN MISSIONARY NURSE KILLED IN LEBANON

A gunman shot and killed an American missionary at close range Thursday morning in the Lebanese port city of Sidon. Bonnie Weatherall, 30, was shot in the head three times with a 7 mm pistol shortly after she opened a health clinic around 8 a.m. (midnight EST) where she was a volunteer nurse, police and church officials said. The killer fled and the motive for the shooting was not known, police said. However, a police source quoted by Associated Press says the crime probably stemmed from anti-Americanism. U.S. Embassy officials were sent to the port city, about 40 miles south of Beirut, to investigate the motive for the shooting. The victim's husband Gary Weatherall, a Briton, issued a statement through the Christian and Missionary Alliance church, saying, "My wife died because of her love for the church and because she loved helping the people of Sidon and Lebanon." Bonnie Weatherall had been a volunteer at the clinic for a little more than a year, a church official said. (Wire Services)

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY DEBATE STALLED IN PERU

The Congress of Peru temporarily suspended debate on revising the constitution before considering the article on religion. Nevertheless, evangelical Protestants who are seeking equal treatment for all faiths consider the postponement a positive opportunity. "This is a good thing for us because it gives us more time to organize ourselves," said Fernando Bellido, religious affairs advisor to Congressman Walter Alejos, a key proponent for amending the constitutional article that discriminates against non-Roman Catholics. Since 1980, the Peruvian government has maintained a Concordat with the Vatican. The treaty codifies preferential treatment for Catholic clergy and organizations. Bellido says he counts from 36 to 39 lawmakers among the 100-member congress who favor constitutional change. A simple majority is required to send the amendment to a referendum. (Compass)

AMAZING EVENTS BRING GYPSIES TO CHRIST IN BULGARIA

"God used amazing ways to bring people to salvation," reports a missionary working among Gypsies in Bulgaria. The first miracle was like the miracle at Cana reversed. While one Gypsy man was drinking whiskey, his believing wife and children prayed earnestly for him, and the man said his whiskey suddenly turned to water! He was so shocked that he repented of his sins and confessed Christ. As the result of doctors prescribing the wrong medical treatment, an eight-month-old baby was overdosed with iron. The doctors said the baby would die by the end of the day. The whole church, of which the mother was a member, interceded for the baby, and the child received new life for the glory of God. Another man got so drunk that he broke his neck and was bed-ridden for months, unable to move. The missionary and fellow believers visited him and prayed for him. He accepted the Lord and was physically restored. His wife also was delivered from lumps on her breasts. News of the apparent miracles spread throughout the village. The man who was healed opened his home for gospel meetings, and the crowd has grown into a congregation of believers. (Christian Aid)

CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS UNITE TO FIGHT AIDS IN NIGERIA

The ongoing war against HIV/AIDS has received an added boost with the launching of a non-governmental organization (NGO) -- Inter-Faith HIV/AIDS Council of Nigeria -- by Christian and Muslim leaders. The new NGO was formed in conjunction with The Balm in Gilead, an African-American NGO in the United States. The Inter-faith HIV/AIDS Council was formed by the leadership of Nigeria's Christian and Muslim communities to address HIV/AIDS issues in response to The Balm In Gilead's call to the communities to come together to address the ever-growing problem of the disease in Nigeria. The new NGO, which has as its motto "In Love, Unity and Hope we fight HIV/AIDS," stated that its mission is to empower religious organizations to play a leadership role in stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and to support those infected and affected by the virus. AMERICAN TEAM EXPLORES WAYS TO HELP REBUILD AFGHANISTAN

A year after Afghanistan was liberated from Taliban rule, a team of American volunteers is on the ground in Kabul, searching out ways to help Afghans rebuild their war-ravaged country. "We're here in Kabul on the one-year anniversary of the liberation of the city," said Mark Morris, chairman of International Friendship Summits, a non-profit organization based in Memphis, Tenn. "We have been able to meet with people in the ministries of health and education. They are saying to us, 'Please give us real help, actual opportunities to work together to do good for this nation.'" Students lined the sidewalks at a girls school when the nine-member American delegation visited Nov. 18. The girls threw rose petals and applauded as the visitors arrived -- returning the warm greeting Memphis students had given Afghan dignitaries who visited their city the previous month. CHINESE PROFESSOR CITES AMERICA'S SPIRITUAL HERITAGE

According to a Chinese university professor, China has for a long time tried to figure out exactly what makes America a great nation. In a recent presentation, and speaking on the condition of anonymity, he came the nearest to a formal recognition of America's spiritual heritage as the reason for its ascendancy on the world scene. The Chinese people have been investigating the answer to this question for some time, he said. They came up with four possible answers: (1) America's military power and weaponry, (2) its democratic political system, (3) the availability of consumer and material goods under capitalism, or (4) the type of culture that exists in the United States. The academician said that during the two Opium Wars of the 19th Century, the Chinese thought that guns and armaments made America powerful. Then during the new Chinese cultural movements of the 20th Century the Chinese believed it was America's political system that was responsible. Later, the Chinese considered the capitalist system as the reason. Finally, he said, the Chinese realized that it was because we have religion at the heart of our culture. Their conclusion: America's greatness is based on a culture that is built on a Christian religious heritage. The professor said that an official government estimate of the number of legally registered Christians in China is about 20 million believers. While no official statistics are available for the number of unregistered Christians, he said that some sociologists estimate there are between 25 and 30 million believers in non-registered churches, depending on who you talk to.    ILLITERATE, 'ALITERATE' FOCUS OF BOOK OF HOPE VIDEO PROJECT

A new animated video could revolutionize the way children come to Christ around the world. Book of Hope's Rob Hoskins says they are currently producing the Book of Hope in this special format to reach those who can't be reached with the printed word. "That would be the illiterate 33 percent of the children of the world. We have large numbers of children in inaccessible areas in China and the Middle East. There's a whole segment that we call the 'aliterate,' which are those children and youth in the First World in the West who know how to read, but choose not to read because they've grown up on media." The project is expected to be completed in March 2003. (Mission Network News)

KENYA CHURCH LEADERS UNHAPPY WITH CONSTITUTION DRAFT

Church leaders in Kenya are unhappy that increased recognition is to be given to Islamic (shari'a) law in a new constitution due to be adopted in the East African country next year. They are also unhappy that the draft constitution aims to allow for abortion and same-sex marriages, which are banned under the present constitution. In this respect, they have the support of Muslim religious leaders. Under the current constitution, "Kadhi's courts" administering shari'a law for Kenyan Muslims are a division of the national law administration hierarchy, without a proper structure of their own. Kadhi is the name given in Kenya to a religious official of a shari'a courts. Their courts currently deal only with matters of personal law, such as marriage and succession disputes, and are located only in areas with a predominantly Muslim population. Drafters of the new constitution want to integrate shari'a law fully into the constitution and establish a clear structure for its administration, including Kadhi's courts at a district and provincial level, along with a Kadhi's Court of Appeal. The draft proposes that the Chief Kadhi's judge should have the status and privileges as a High Court judge. Christian leaders say the new constitution should unite Kenyans and not divide them along religious lines. (CNSNews)

AFRICA'S CHILDREN: WHO WILL WIN HEARTS AND MINDS?

The race is on for the hearts and minds of children in Africa. Worldwide Christian Schools President Scott Vander Kooy says Africa is 49 percent Christian and 42 percent Muslim. He says Africa is positioned to be a significant power base for either Mohammed or Jesus Christ. To help turn the tide to Christ, Worldwide Christian Schools is raising funds for Christian schools and training across Africa. (Mission Network News)

EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS FLEXING THEIR MUSCLES IN BRAZIL

In the world's largest Roman Catholic country, evangelical Christians are growing in record numbers and starting to flex their muscles in Brazilian politics. Evangelicals, largely of Protestant faith, make up 15.5 percent of the population, census takers report. That's up from almost nothing a few years ago. Seventy-three percent of Brazil's 170 million people are Catholic. In October elections, evangelicals captured 10 percent of congressional seats, and an evangelical Christian nearly finished second in the closely fought presidential race. In ideology, evangelical leaders tend to be left-leaning, particularly on issues of social welfare, public health and education. Indeed, most grew up in the impoverished communities they represent. Although the Catholic Church has dominated political and public life in Brazil since Portuguese conquistadors arrived in 1500, that's not the case in the sprawling suburbs and satellite cities that now ring Brazil's cities. There, in communities made up largely of migrants from rural Brazil, evangelical activity is everywhere while government services and Catholic parishes both are scarce. In poor, forgotten satellite cities such as Nova Iguacu, an evangelical hotbed an hour from Rio de Janeiro's famed beaches, evangelical churches provide rudimentary health care, daycare services and someone to watch over the elderly. INDIAN OVERTAKES CHINA IN SENDING STUDENTS TO U.S.

India surpasses China as the leading country of origin for international students in the United States, according to a study released by the Institute of International Education. A record 66,836 Indians came to study in the United States last academic year, overtaking China (63,211), which occupied the top place for the past several years. Indians constitute 11.5 percent of the nearly 583,000 foreign students who came to the U.S. to study in the year 2001-2002. The number of Indians coming to the U.S. to study has almost doubled since 1997-1998. (Indiatimes)

'BOX OF LOVE' TO BRIGHTEN THANKSGIVING FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

Christians are being encouraged to help families in need in the U.S. during the Thanksgiving holiday. Ted Gandy, national director of a New York-based ministry called U.S. Life Inner City, has a program called, "A Box of Love." Through this program, boxes containing a traditional Thanksgiving meal with "all the holiday trimmings" are handed out to needy families, Gandy says. In addition to the food, the box contains a printed gospel message. "It's also a chance, then, to share Christ and begin a relationship with that family that will continue throughout the year," he says. This year the ministry plans to distribute 26,000 boxes.
