BILLY GRAHAM ODMÍTÁ JÍT DO VÝSLUŽBY A PLÁNUJE EVANGELIZACI V SAN DIEGU.

VIETNAMESE POLICE USE GAS TO BREAK UP MEETING OF HMONG BELIEVERS

Police used noxious gas to break up a Christian worship gathering attended by 40 Hmong people in the Dien Bien Dong district of northern Vietnam on Sunday, Dec. 29. "Police discovered the meeting, so they came to stop it by spraying noxious gas to these Christians," said a confidential source. "Now 20 Christians are in hospital; five of them seem to be not able to recover as they are in serious convulsion." Many of the Hmong believers came to Christ as a result of broadcasts from Far East Broadcasting Co. "Since they believed Jesus, they have been under constant intimidation and oppression from the government," the source said. FEBC President Jim Bowman expressed concern about the persecution. "We cannot sit and watch our brothers and sisters in Christ suffer in such perilous circumstances," he said. "We live in a country that exists as the world's greatest advocacy for human rights, and as Christians we must -- with brotherly love and courage -- raise our voices on behalf of the Hmong people. Join us not only in praying for the Hmong people, but contact your local government representatives and request for investigations to be made in to these unconscionable acts of brutality." A report from International Christian Concern issued in April 2002 includes documents that reveal a deliberate anti-Christian campaign against tribal groups in Vietnam. (Assist News Service)

DEVASTATING FIRE RAVAGES MISSION OFFICE IN GHANA

In the West African country of Ghana one missions agency recently suffered a devastating setback to its work. A power surge sparked a fire that gutted African Enterprise's office. "We lost everything," said Ghana team leader Nii Amoo. "Unfortunately, the house was not insured, and the contents were not insured. It has completely devastated the building. The building itself has cracks. The upstairs space will need to be pulled down in order to be rebuilt. As a result, we have moved out." Despite the setback, the ministry continues. "We are praying to God that in the midst of everything that was lost, we'll still continue to do ministry with them," Amoo said. "We are going to have a medical mission. We also have outreaches to orphanages and some schools, and we are planning some evangelistic outreaches." (Mission Network News)

VIOLENCE DRIVES MANY NOMINAL INDONESIAN MUSLIMS AWAY FROM ISLAM

Analysts say that recent violence by Islamic radicals in Indonesia may actually be driving people from Islam. About 80 percent of Indonesia's 212 million people is Muslim. Carl Cady, U.S. director for International Friends of Compassion, says that only about 70 million Muslims are registered at local mosques. Another 100 million are "casual" Muslims who do not attend the mosque regularly or have a strong devotion to Islam. "These are the ones who are questioning Islam," Cady said. "The radicals who have bombed and killed in the name of Islam are not winning many of these. In fact, I have spoken to pastors in Central Java since 9/11, and they said large numbers of Muslims have started attending churches in the area saying, 'If running into buildings and killing innocent people is what Islam is all about, we don't want anything to do with it.'" Radical fundamentalists are targeting poor Muslims in their recruitment efforts, Cady adds. "It is to their advantage to destabilize the economy in Indonesia," he says. "The bombings around the country serve to discourage investment and travel. This floundering economy is a needed component in the advancement of the fundamentalist message. The leaders of Indonesia know this and also recognize that if they are not careful how they deal with the radical wing of Islam, they could actually spark a fundamentalist revival." ADVENTIST WORLD RADIO RESUMES SHORTWAVE BROADCASTS FROM GUAM

After being without electricity for 22 days, Adventist World Radio's shortwave station in Guam is back on the air with a full schedule of broadcasts to Asia and the western Pacific. Electricity was restored to the station on Friday, Jan. 3, after going off the air Dec. 8 when a typhoon ravaged the island for nearly 10 hours. Local residents said this was the worst storm to ever hit the area. All four of the tall curtain antennas at radio station KSDA sustained serious damage, and the emergency generator failed and was declared irreparable. While the station was off the air, Seventh-day Adventist programming was transferred to leased transmitters at other shortwave stations in the United Arab Emirates and in Taiwan. This interim emergency schedule was discontinued on Sunday, Jan. 5. Although local electricity on Guam still isn't fully restored to customers, it was reconnected to AWR on Jan. 3, allowing broadcasts to resume on four transmitters almost immediately. While the programming in English and Asian languages targets Asia, the signal from Guam can be heard around the world. (Adventist World Radio)

INNOVATIVE PROGRAM HELPS TEENS BETTER IDENTIFY WITH REFUGEES

World Relief has launched a program called Real Refugee designed to help teens identify with the suffering victims of war, terror and persecution. Real Refugee makes the plight of suffering people relevant to teenagers by exposing them to actual problems that refugees encounter. The overnight youth program shows teens what newly arrived refugees in America must face -- hunger, crowded housing facilities, intense scrutiny from immigration officials, and the struggle of adapting to a different culture. Participants said they experience the feelings of fear, loneliness, isolation and rejection that refugees go through. As teens realize how much they have in common with refugees, they adopt a sense of acceptance and understanding toward people who are "different." The Bible-centered program is available to interested student organizations, youth groups, high schools and colleges. World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals, has helped 170,000 refugees begin new lives in the U.S. (World Relief)

BILLY GRAHAM SPURNS RETIREMENT, ANNOUNCES SAN DIEGO CRUSADE

Just when people thought 84-year-old evangelist Billy Graham was about to retire, he announced a four-night crusade at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego May 8-11, giving organizers less than five months to prepare. Mike MacIntosh, senior pastor of Horizon Christian Fellowship in San Diego, said, the event "will unite many pastors in America's sixth-largest city. It is firing up the body of Christ. We had close to 1,000 volunteers in our first announcement at our church this weekend." MacIntosh urged believers to pray for the event. "There are lots of evil things in our city, and we would like to see the stronghold of evil broken and have thousands of people to come to salvation through Jesus Christ." This will be Graham's fourth crusade in San Diego and 413th worldwide. San Diego hosted similar events in 1958, 1964 and 1976. The outreach is expected to draw more than 60,000 people per night. Rick Marshall, director of missions for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said the evangelist plans to keep preaching as long as he has the health and strength. (Assist News Service)
