(IDEA)

LATVIAN JUSTICE MINISTER SUPPORTS PROPOSAL TO RELAX RELIGION LAW

A spokesman for Latvian Justice Minister Aivars Aksenoks says he will support a proposal to abolish a clause in Latvia's religion law that bans the registration of more than one association of any one denomination. "I absolutely agree that allowing only one church for any one confession is against the principles of religious freedom," said Ringolds Balodis, head of the Justice Ministry's Religious Affairs Board, who intends to submit the proposal by June 10. Without registration as a religious association, communities find it difficult to own property, do not enjoy tax-exempt status and cannot set up training establishments. The Confessional Lutheran Church and the Autonomous True Orthodox Church are most affected by this clause. (Forum 18 News Service)

THIEVES STEAL BLANKETS FROM CHRISTIAN YOUTH CAMP IN JORDAN

A nondenominational Christian youth camp in Salt, Jordan, preparing for its usual summer onslaught of youngsters in just a few weeks, suffered a blow earlier this month with the theft of 200 blankets. The camp is a project of Amman-based Manara Ministries which reaches out to needy Christians. Manara Director Isam Ghattas said the blankets and other stolen items will cost about 3,150 dinars (US$4,440), to replace. "Bad neighbors stole the blankets when there was nobody at the church campgrounds. They broke the windows," he said. While the loss is a setback, it won't stop the camps. The ministry offers five camps a year and can accommodate about 150 children during each session. (Assist News Service)

OPERATION MOBILIZATION LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE SHIP

One of Operation Mobilization's ships was built within two years of the Titanic and holds a Guinness Book record for longevity. The other, a converted ferry christened in the 1960s, is too small and needs to be replaced. "We're bulging at the seams," says John Seaman, chief engineer for Logos II, one of two vessels being used by OM to reach the world for Christ. Graham Wells, chief operating officer for OM USA, says an effort to replacement the smaller ship has begun in earnest, with several ships being studied. "We're researching a number of options, and hoping to move pretty quickly. It's a worldwide campaign, and we hope to get every country involved." Cost to replace the ship is estimated at $18 million. Since 1971 OM ships have touched 30 million people in 140 countries, distributing tens of millions of Christian and educational books and spreading the good news through outreach teams and onboard presentations. While Christian literature and other educational books are plentiful in most Western countries, this isn't true in most of the world, says Lane Powell, publications editor for OM. "Most places we visit don't have a Borders or Barnes and Noble. In other countries literature is more highly valued, and this can be the biggest thing in town. People line up one to two miles in some parts of the world. We have had up to 6,000 people visiting the Logos II in one day." (Assist News Service)

100,000 VIDEO COPIES OF 'JESUS' FILM TO BE PREPARED FOR IRAQ

Staff members working with the "Jesus" film say there's a tremendous hunger for the gospel as hostilities end in Iraq. After 24 years of the brutal oppression and fear, millions of Iraqis are desperate for truth and love. Christian Iraqis see great opportunities ahead. They are asking for videos and audiocassettes of the "Jesus" film, even for former members of the Republican Guard. The ministry is assembling film and video teams for Iraq and raising funds to produce 100,000 videocassettes. (Mission Network News)

ONLINE SURVEY: FAITH PLAYS MINOR ROLE FOR MOST GERMANS

Faith has little or no meaning for most Germans. Although nearly two-thirds of the 82 million inhabitants are church members, only 39 percent describe themselves as "religious." Worship is "irrelevant" for one in three of all church members. These are some of the results of an online survey conducted by Stern magazine, the television channel ZDF and McKinsey consultants. More than 356,000 citizens took part in the survey. There is a marked religious gulf between eastern and western Germany. In Bavaria about 50 percent of the population regard themselves as religious, but only 14 percent in the heartland of Luther's reformation say so. The survey also reveals a loss of confidence in churches. Only 17 percent of the German population have faith in Protestant churches, and just 11 percent in the Catholic church. Nineteen percent of Protestants and 7 percent of the Catholics would like to see joint participation in Holy Communion. (IDEA)

WIND-UP CASSETTE PLAYERS TO BRING GOSPEL TO REMOTE MEXICAN TRIBES

Audio Scripture Ministries says a missionary in Mexico plans to use wind-up cassette tape players to spread the gospel among the country's non-Spanish-speaking mountain Indian tribes. Ministry spokesman Tom Dudenhoffer says the players encourage those who are persecuted for their faith. "When someone trusts Jesus Christ as their Savior, they are often ostracized from their tribe," he says. "They've even been killed because of their profession of faith. So this is an area that is full of spiritual warfare. We're asking God right now to use these portions of His Word as they go out among the Indians of the mountains of Mexico." Distributing the tape players can be a challenging task. "Missionaries are not necessarily welcome in these areas," Dudenhoffer says. "So it has to be somebody who will be accepted by the people and will at least give them an opportunity to hear God's Word as it's provided." Distribution is expected to begin this summer. (Mission Network News)

* Through HCJB World Radio's "Turn the Radios On" campaign, the ministry works in conjunction with Christian radio stations and churches across the U.S. to distribute fix-tuned, solar-powered radios to needy people in Africa, Mexico and other parts of the world. Since January 2001 more than 7,000 of the sets have been delivered worldwide, 2,000 are on order, and funds have been raised to purchase an additional 10,000 radios.
