(Mission Network News)

NIGERIAN STATE GOVERNOR VOWS TO FULLY IMPLEMENT ISLAMIC LAW

The governor of northern Nigeria's Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has reiterated that nothing will stop the full implementation of sharia (Islamic law) in the state despite pressure both from within and outside. The announcement came at a time when parts of northern Nigeria were in turmoil from a militant Islamic group attempting to establish a Taliban-like Islamic nation in the northeastern state of Yobe. The government says the uprising, which began Dec. 30, has been quelled. At least two police officers and six militants were killed, and many were arrested as they attempted to flee to neighboring Niger. More than 10,000 people have fled their homes in fear. Also this week, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo joined Christian and Muslim leaders in calling for peace and religious harmony in Nigeria. (Voice of the Martyrs)

* HCJB World Radio, together with partners In Touch Ministries, SIM and the Evangelical Church of West Africa, began airing weekly half-hour programs to Nigeria in the Igbo language in 2000. In 2003, weekly broadcasts were added in two additional languages: Yoruba and Hausa.

GEOLOGISTS DEMAND REMOVAL OF CREATIONIST BOOK FROM NATIONAL PARK

A new book offering an alternative view of how the Grand Canyon was formed is the object of a book-banning effort by prominent evolutionists who have demanded that the Grand Canyon National Park Service remove it from bookstores within the park. Grand Canyon: A Different View is the work of Tom Vail who collected essays from 23 contributors (most of whom hold earned doctorates in science). The book presents a creation science viewpoint of the canyon's formation, presenting evidence that it was formed by large volumes of water in a short period of time. It has been on sale at the canyon's bookstores since last fall, raising the hackles of the presidents of seven science organizations who jointly signed a Dec. 16 letter to the park's superintendent urging him to remove the book. Staff members then moved the book to the inspirational reading section from the natural sciences section. The book was unanimously approved by a new-product review panel of park and gift shop personnel. Meanwhile, the book has sold out and is being reordered, The Los Angeles Times reported. Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, called efforts to ban the book remarkable. "Although the beautifully illustrated book is low key, it still has managed to shake up the evolutionary community and its strongly held beliefs about the Grand Canyon and its supposed history of millions of years," he said. "I hope the controversy will lead many more people, including Grand Canyon visitors, to read its alternative, scientific viewpoint." (Assist News Service)

Scripture Union has named Janet Morgan as the chief executive officer of Scripture Union International effective in March. She now serves as the ministry's state director for Victoria, Australia, and will continue to be based in Australia. COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL ADDS 82,000 CHILD SPONSORSHIPS IN ONE YEAR

Compassion International added more than 82,000 new child sponsorships in 2003, helping poor children overcome poverty while giving them new hope in Christ. Spokesman Rick Mitchell says the ministry encourages sponsors to build a relationship with their child through writing letters. Compassion also ensures that each sponsored child gets an education and the opportunity to develop socially, be healthy and have enough food. "The foundation of everything Compassion does is spiritual, and sponsors are making an investment in lives that will make an impact eternally," Mitchell says. "They work strictly with local churches to ensure that the child is going to hear the gospel on a regular basis. This is modeled for them in the lives of the people running the program. The children get the opportunity to accept Christ and to be discipled in faith through a local church." Last year more than 80,000 people made commitments to Christ through Compassion's programs. MINISTRY FOCUSES ON YOUTHS AS DRUG USE, ALCOHOLISM, ABORTION GO UP

Church planting continues to be the major emphasis of Russian Ministries, but the organization is help evangelize young people. Spokesman David Westrum says that there are "10 million drug addicts officially in Russia. Forty percent of men are alcoholics, and 3 million abortions took place last year [contributing to the country's declining population]. The church gives answers and shows young people that there is meaning to life." Westrum says the key to church growth in Russia is teaching new believers to become leaders who will in turn disciple others. (Mission Network News)
