FLOOD DEATH TOLLS RISING IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, HAITI Flash floods washed away hundreds of homes in both the Dominican Republic and across the border in Haiti this week. The governments of both countries are estimating death tolls between 1,000 and 2,000 after the Solie River burst its banks. Small shacks, made of little more than tin sheets and bricks, collapsed under the force of water and landslides after weeks of steady rain. Tamera Dutch, of Food For The Hungry, says their assessment team and emergency supplies are already in Jimani. “There were 13-thosuand individuals and families that were homeless. They were looking for shelter. We are going to distribute food, clothing and bedding items.” The situation is rapidly growing worse because of the threat of contaminates left from standing water and lack of shelter from the elements. This combination is a prime attraction for mosquitoes that can carry parasites and result in rapidly spreading malaria and dengue fever. Dutch says they’re working with church partners in the distribution of the relief supplies. More than 100 outlets in 18 countries across Latin America are affiliated with ALAS. MESSIANIC JEWS AND PALESTINIAN CHRISTIANS UNITE AMID BLOODSHED Israel’s withdrawal from parts of the Gaza Strip following a week of bloodshed has boosted an unprecedented unity among Palestinian Christians and Messianic Jews as well as church growth, a Christian organization working in the region said Wednesday, May 26. Tom Doyle, Evangecube International official, told a Christian news service that uncertainty is “bonding the Messianic Jewish Church and the Palestinian Church.” He stressed that God is allowing this time of uncertainty to cause different churches to cling together. Doyle added that Messianic churches of Jews accepting Christ as Lord have grown from about four to “over 200” in the last 20 years. He said the same church growth was reported in Palestinian areas where “a brand new church in Bethlehem” just started a year ago and “has over 300 people.” Doyle was quoted as saying that both Muslims and Jews “are very open to the Gospel” of Jesus Christ. Final details are expected to be hammered out in another month. The civil war between the predominantly Arab Muslim north and the mostly African Christian/animist south has claimed 2 million lives -- many because of war-induced famine -- and displaced four million from their homes. Sudanese Christians have been caught in the crossfire of the civil war with many being tortured, raped and killed. Christian villages and churches in the south have often been attacked, bombed and burned. Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller said, “Southern Sudan has deservedly earned a reputation of one of the most hostile places on Earth for Christians. We need to continue to pray that the final details of the agreement will be put into place and a permanent peace will finally be realized.” Despite the fighting and violence, Christianity has grown rapidly in southern Sudan. According to Operation World, Christianity in the south has grown from 5 percent in 1960 to 70 percent in 2000. The fighting has virtually destroyed the school system in the areas where Christians live. (CNN/Open Doors) GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA HOSPITALIZED AFTER APPARENT HEART ATTACK America’s Beloved Gospel Singer, George Beverly Shea, who’s been singing with Billy Graham for more than 60 years, is hospitalized in North Carolina after suffering an apparent heart attack. “Family members say an angiogram found a blockage that may require open heart surgery, but add that the 95-year-old Shea is in stable condition,” said an AP story. According to the Billy Graham website, since George Beverly Shea first sang for Billy Graham on the Chicago radio hymn program, “Songs in the Night,” in 1943, he has carried the gospel in song to every continent and every state in the Union. He is the recipient of 10 Grammy nominations, one Grammy Award and is a member of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame. As the musical mainstay in Mr. Graham’s Crusades, Bev Shea is often called “America’s Beloved Gospel Singer.” (Assist News Service) SALVATION ARMY VOWS NOT TO COMPROMISE PRINCIPLES IN NEW YORK CITY The Salvation Army is vowing to stand by its Christian principles in a pending battle over the more than $250 million in contracts it has with New York City. The city is on the verge of passing a law which would force entities with city contracts to write same-sex benefits into their hiring policies. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said such laws illustrate several implications of legalized homosexual “marriage” -- the economic cost, the threat to religious liberty, and the willingness of activists to sacrifice the needy to advance their agenda. “The bottom line,” said Perkins “is that religious organizations will either be forced to compromise their moral principles, or the neediest people in our nation’s cities will be deprived of the effective services faith-based organizations can provide.” New York City is the Salvation Army’s largest area of ministry, with soup kitchens, thrift shops, and recovery centers ministering to tens of thousands. Army spokesman Major George Hood told Family News In Focus that they will not compromise. “Our existing policy is that we will not sign any contracts that require domestic-partner benefits, or contracts that force The Salvation Army to change its spiritual integrity,” he stated. (Agape Press) NATIONAL PRAYER EVENT IN RUSSIA UNIFIES LEADERS More than 200 people attended Russia’s National Prayer Breakfast, held last month in the Marriott Aurora Hotel Moscow. Representatives from Russian Ministries served on the planning committee for the event, which brought together a wide variety of Christians, leading politicians, business people, and church leaders for a time of national prayer. “Prayer unified people from different churches, which is something new for Russia. As we bow with one another in prayer, I believe prayer’s power can jump over the obstacles that used to divide us, focus us more purposefully on reaching unbelievers in every segment of society so we can show the love of Christ to them,” said Sergey Rakhuba, vice president of Russian Ministries. (Mission Network News) * HCJB World Radio reaches across Russia with a variety of radio ministries. The mission has been sending gospel broadcasts across the country via shortwave since 1941, first from Quito, Ecuador, and now from the U.K. In the early 1990s the ministry began “planting” local radio ministries in Russia and now works with partners in more than a dozen cities. In 2000 HCJB World Radio helped launch the first Christian Russian radio satellite network (operated by Christian Radio for Russia), reaching across Euro-Asia. Downlinks have been installed with more than 26 partners in Russia alone.
