Stejně důležitý je i přístup samotných křesťanů v církvi k těmto nemocným lidem, protože podpora a citlivý přístup pomáhají v boji duševně nemocným.
CHINA DENIES DETAINING 3 CATHOLIC BISHOPS China denied Friday, June 25, Vatican claims that it detained three bishops from the country’s rapidly growing underground Roman Catholic Church, which refuses to recognize the Communist government as its authority. In statements, China’s Religious Affairs Office (RAO) and the Foreign Ministry suggested that all three church leaders had been held on a “voluntary basis” and officials said at least one of them had undergone “religious education.” The Vatican Press Office had expressed its “profound pain” for the arrest of Monsignor Zhao Zhengdong, who it said was taken “into custody by police and his place of detention is not known.” The Vatican said it was also worried by the detention of two of bishops of the underground Church, who Asia News identified as Msgr Jia Zhiguo, Bishop of Zhengding, arrested from June 13 to 18, and Msgr Leo Yaoliang, Coadujtor Bishop of Xiwanzi, held in police custody June 2 to June 12. In addition, on June 13, the Trappist father, Placido Pei Ronggui, was arrested and released June 18, Asia News said. Scores of other Catholic Church leaders as well as nuns monks and ordinary believers have been detained in recent months, Catholic Church officials say. (Assist News Service) ATTACKS BY CHECHEN REBELS COULD HURT MINISTRY IN RUSSIA Attacks last week in Russia’s Ingushetia by Chechen rebels have ministry leaders concerned about their future work. The well planned attacks near the Chechen border left nearly 100 people dead. The attacks have Russian security officials on high alert. Russian Ministries’ Sergey Rakhuba says the terrorist attacks shocked the nation. Speaking from Russia, Rakhuba says their work among the Chechen people will be affected for the time being. “Of course it will affect us because [there will be] a lot more control, a lot more violence, and Russians will not be allowed there for a while because of this. Ultimately, for the next couple of months it will affect our outreach across the border with Chechnya and Ingushetia.” The attacks will hurt their summer camping ministry most as some of the camps could be prevented because of the military presence. (Mission Network News) * HCJB World Radio actively helps develop a variety of local radio ministries in Euro-Asia (Central Europe, Ukraine, Russia and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States). Full-time positions are open, including helping train future Christian broadcasters, technical assistance (information technology, broadcast studio design and construction), program development and administrative roles. CHRISTIAN RADIO MINISTRY IN LONDON GOES NATIONAL London’s Premier Christian Radio is going national in the U.K. The station has been allocated a channel on the free-to-air digital service, Freeview. This means that Premier, once a London-only station, will be available nationwide. Anyone with a Freeview set-top box or an integrated digital television will be able to receive the service. At a special event organized to commemorate the station’s ninth birthday on Tuesday, June 22, Managing Director Peter Kerridge revealed the news to supporters and friends of Premier. “We’re tremendously excited to announce that we’ve had the green light to start broadcasting on Freeview,” said Kerridge. “Although we have been broadcasting nationally for some time on Sky Digital, NTL and the Internet, we feel that this step is potentially the biggest in our history. For the first time Christian radio is available across the nation at a price most people can afford.” The station could begin broadcasting on the platform as early as September. (Religion Today/Assist News Service) PSYCHOLOGIST STRESSES ROLE OF FAITH IN OVERCOMING MENTAL ILLNESS A Christian psychologist says faith plays a very important role in helping a patient recover from or cope with a mental illness. Dr. Robert Rogan, a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, says all physicians need to take spiritual foundation into consideration when treating mentally ill patients. “In my work I’ve noticed that people that come from a Christian background have a strength with which to do better ultimately and to continue to do better than those that may not come from that background,” he explained. The doctor says with Christ individuals can endure any type of discomfort or difficulty. However, he notes that churches are often less than supportive of the mentally ill in their congregations. “A person may be dealing with a lot of anxiety and fear over a situation, but he may feel reluctant to express that in church or among his friends because fear is not really an acceptable Christian emotion,” Rogan says. He encourages Christians to find ways to support and be sensitive to the struggles of the mentally ill in their midst, and to recognize the importance of faith in the healing process. (Religion Today/Agape Press) GALLUP POLL: RELIGION ‘VERY IMPORTANT’ TO 6 IN 10 AMERICANS Roughly six in 10 Americans say religion is a “very important” part of their lives and believe religion can answer all or most of today’s problems. A majority of Americans say they attend religious services at least once a month, including a third who go every week, and six in 10 are members of a church or synagogue. More than eight in 10 Americans identify themselves as Christian. About half of all Christians are Protestant and about a quarter are Catholic. Fewer than one in 10 Americans have no religious affiliation. About two-thirds of Americans (64 percent) belong to a church or synagogue. Self-reported church membership has fluctuated slightly since the early 1990s, with yearly averages ranging between the current level and 70 percent in 1999. These results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,000 adults in early June. (Gallup News Service/WorldWide Religious News) * * * * * * * * * * * * *
