United Press International hlásí, že 19. května 2006 iránský parlament schválil zákon, na jehož základě by mohlo být po Židech, křesťanech a příslušnících jiných náboženských menšin požadováno nošení barevných rozlišovacích odznaků. Zákon ještě musí schválit nejvyšší vůdce ajatoláh Ali Chameneí . Vstoupí-li zákon v platnost, bude 25 000 iránských Židů muset nosit žlutou pásku na oděvu. Křesťané budou muset nosit červenou pásku a zoroastriáni modrou. (UPI/ Christian Newswire)

'PROJECT PEARL' BIBLES IMPACT CHINESE CHURCH 25 YEARS LATER

On June 18, 1981 Open Doors delivered one million complete Chinese Bibles by boat to Chinese Christians awaiting the secret meeting on shore. The total cargo weighed 232 tons and was hand carried up the beach box by box. Chinese believers circulated the Bibles across the nation, at times paying for the illegal activity with their lives. Over the past 25 years, Open Doors has received story after story-often from unusual places and situations-of the impact these Bibles had on the church in China. In one case police threw bibles into the sea that later were retrieved and dried by fishermen. Another instance saw Christians retrieving bibles out of a cesspool and dousing them with perfume to cover the smell. Project Pearl Bibles have been seen in virtually every province of the country. Noted author, David Aikman, wrote last year, "[Project] Pearl had a major long-term impact on the overall availability of Bibles in China." (Assist News Service/Evangelical News)

ERITREA JAILS 3 ORTHODOX RENEWAL MOVEMENT LEADERS

The northeast African nation of Eritrea has jailed three more controversial leaders of the Orthodox renewal movement Medhane Alem. The arrests are designed to quell widespread reaction to the excommunication of 65 group members two months ago. Nine months ago the Eritrean Orthodox Holy Synod was taken over by a government appointed layman who ousted Patriarch Abune Antonios last year. This move violated canonical law, which only permits a patriarch's removal for reasons of immorality, heresy or physical/mental infirmity. It remains uncertain if Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki will agree to allow Orthodox Pope Shenoudah III to determine the validity of the patriarchs removal without government interference. POPULATION DECLINE TIED TO HIV/AIDS CRISIS IN RUSSIA

Russian Ministries workers partially attribute a population drop of more than 700,000 people each year to a growing HIV/AIDS problem within the nation. Worker Anita Deyneka says the crisis lies among the youth. "[In] most of the world, about 80% of those infected are over 35 years of age. In Russia, 80% of those infected are under 30 years of age." Russian Ministries holds youth rallies preaching HIV prevention, morality and healthy lifestyles while presenting the gospel, but Deyneka claims "it's a drop in the ocean considering the magnitude of the problem." The Associated Press reports a new study showing an estimated 1million people infected - three times the number officially reported by Russian reports. (Mission Network News/AP)

The mission began sending gospel broadcasts across the country via shortwave in 1941, first from Quito, Ecuador, and in recent years from the U.K. In the early 1990s the ministry began "planting" local radio ministries in Russia and now works with partners nationwide. In 2000 HCJB World Radio helped launch New Life Radio, the first Christian Russian satellite radio network. More than 63 downlinks have been placed in more than 42 cities across Russia and neighboring countries.

NEW IRANIAN LAW MAY REQUIRE JEWS/CHRISTIANS TO WEAR COLORED ID TAGS

United Press International reported on May 19, 2006, that Iran's parliament has passed new laws that would require Jews, Christians, and other minority religions to wear color-coded ID badges. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is still required to approve the law for it to take effect. If approved, the law would require almost 25,000 Jews in Iran to wear a yellow strip of cloth on their clothes. Christians would be required to wear red badges and Zoroastrians blue. NEW STUDY INDICATES LOWER CHURCH ATTENDANCE

A new study by Episcopal Church researcher Kirk Hadaway and Samford University's Penny Marler contradicts the long-accepted church attendance numbers published by Gallup pollsters. Since 1939 Gallup pollsters have posed a standard church attendance question resulting in statistics indicating around 40 percent of Americans, or around 118 million people, attend church each Sunday. Hadaway and Marler's study estimated the total number of churches in the U.S. at around 331,000. Using other current research and mainline church attendance data they estimated average attendance on a given Sunday. The average church attendance was 161.9 people translating to only a 20.4 percent attendance rate-about half the Gallup figure. (Agape Press/Christianity Today)
