(Compass Direct)

CHURCHES CATERING TO WORLD CUP SOCCER FANS IN GERMANY

More than 1,000 churches and community centers in the 12 cities hosting World Cup soccer games that begin Friday, June 9, are encouraging fans to exchange barstools and pints of beer for pews and prayers. The churches are renting big-screen televisions to broadcast games to their congregations in live broadcasts. Additionally, worship times are being altered so people can come before the match begins. Churches are presenting special services in languages that correspond to the languages of the teams playing. All this is part of a nationwide project called kickoff2006 designed to "kick-start your faith" during the World Cup events. "We want to show people that believing is something normal that belongs in life and not just in church," said Pastor Michael Hoering who is organizing the events in the city. COURT ACQUITS 16 CHRISTIANS FALSELY CHARGED WITH MURDER IN INDIA

A district court in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state acquitted 16 Christians accused of killing a Hindu fundamentalist during the violence that arose when a young girl’s body was found inside a Catholic school in Jhabua in 2004. The judge cited lack of evidence and fabrication of testimonies against the Christians. The slain fundamentalist was instead killed by members of his own group in the confusion of the violence directed at the Christians in outrage against the girl’s murder and rape. The Hindu extremists rushed the man’s body away and later accused the Christians of the murder. An anonymous source claimed that a state legislator pressured the police to charge the Christians to aid the cover up. Fourteen of the 16 Christians have been in jail for more than two years for the crime. A Hindu employee of an insurance company confessed that he was responsible for the rape and murder of the girl in the Catholic school which spawned a string of attacks against Christians and churches back in 2004. STUDY SHOWS ORTHODOX CHURCH GAINING STATUS AMONG RUSSIAN YOUTH

A recent study by Moscow State University’s Department of Sociology indicates the Russian Orthodox Church is gaining status with Russian young people. In the poll of 1,800 young people in seven federal districts, 8 percent say they attend Orthodox services and 33 percent have positive feelings about the Russian Orthodox Church regardless of their own religious convictions while 53 percent say the Russian president should be an Orthodox believer. Three-quarters say Orthodox belief is the foundation of Russian culture, and more than 33 percent feel the opinion of the Orthodox patriarch matters when making state decisions. Deputy Dean Igor Ryazantsev says, "Obviously, the Russian Orthodox Church has become an authoritative social institute in the eyes of young Russians. The society of militant atheists is gone." MILITARY FORCES TARGET CHRISTIANS IN MYANMAR’S KAREN STATE

Military forces in Myanmar (Burma) continue large-scale offensives targeting Christians in the country’s predominantly Christian Karen state. The offensive, the largest since 1997, is resulting in reports of killings, sacking of villages, the capture of civilians (including children) and the use of forced labor. The Free Burma Rangers, a relief organization working in Myanmar, reported that more than 18,000 people are displaced with 800 civilians forced to be porters for the military. More than 1,000 Karen residents have been taken prisoner. The latest attack on Friday, June 2, involved a Myanmar light infantry battalion attacking Ger Baw Kee village in southern Myanmar with mortars. Villagers are being shot at point-blank range, some of whom have been found beheaded and mutilated. Christian Solidarity Worldwide also reported special battalions capturing Karen children who attend school in army-controlled areas. (Assist News Service/Christian Solidarity Worldwide)

8,300 ‘MILLION-DOLLAR BILL’ TRACTS SEIZED FROM MINISTRY IN TEXAS

On Friday, June 2, U.S. Secret Service agents seized 8,300 gospel tracts designed to look like "million-dollar bills" on one side while presenting a salvation message on the reverse. Darrel Rudus, founder of Great News Network in Denton, Texas, said he was mystified by the seizure, especially since million-dollar bills don’t exist in the U.S. and it was "impossible to counterfeit something that isn’t real." He noted that his organization is not responsible for printing the bills. Living Waters Ministry, under the leadership of evangelist Ray Comfort in southern California, prints and distributes millions of the tracts each year. One person in North Carolina reportedly tried to deposit one of the tracts in a bank account. Comfort said he expects agents to visit his offices in California soon, but won’t turn over copies of his best-selling tract so easily. (WorldNet Daily/Christian Newswire)
