‘UNOFFICIAL’ NUMBERS INDICATE 130 MILLION CHINESE CHRISTIANS

Internal meetings of the Chinese State Administration for Religious Affairs revealed research indicating that the number of Christians in China has reached 130 million, including 20 million Catholics. This number is much higher than official government statistics that often underestimate the number of Christians. “The unprecedented growth of the Chinese church has happened under ceaseless persecution,” said China Aid Association President Bob Fu. “Pray that China will realize true religious freedom soon.” (China Aid Association/Christian Newswire)

HONDURAN CHRISTIAN WORKER IN HIDING FOLLOWING DEATH THREATS

Carlos Hernandes, president of the Association for a More Just Society (AJS) in Honduras, is in hiding following a death threat immediately after the killing of well-known lawyer Dionisio Díaz García who was often called the “lawyer for the poor.” Both men have ties to the ministry of Worldwide Christian Schools (WCS) in Honduras.

WCS spokesman Steve Geurink said of Hernandes, “Obviously this disrupts his normal work. Carlos has been extremely important to our work and ministry. He has a guard with him 24/7, and they are taking these threats very seriously.” Geurink believes Hernandes faces a death threat due to his effectiveness in amplifying their schools’ evangelistic work.

“Carlos was meeting with the church leaders, community leaders, families, teachers and school boards, and he was presenting to them effective ministry options for Christian schools that’s basically a school improvement process,” he explained. “He was bringing all these different parties together and was having amazing results.”

WCS is encouraging placing pressure on the Honduran government to address the corruption that led to Garcia’s death and Hernandes’ need to hide. VIETNAMESE BELIEVERS HARASSED AT PRAYER MEETINGS

Vietnamese security forces raided several prayer meetings of Montagnard Christians in Vietnam’s central highlands in late November and again in December, causing dozens of injuries. An estimated 2,000 Catholics were gathered for prayer in Ploi H’mong K’tu village in Kontum province Tuesday, Dec. 12, when Montagnard Foundation sources reported, “Vietnamese government police and soldiers then attacked them, beating the unarmed Christians with sticks and batons. Crowds of men, women and children were driven into a ditch while children screamed and cried.” In an earlier incident, an estimated 1,500 Protestant Montagnard believers from the province of Dak To were raided while they gathered at the village of Ploi H’mong K’tu on Nov. 30. As the Christians were praying, “Vietnamese police and soldiers from [nearby] Dak Ha district attacked them and dispersed the praying Christians.” About 15 villagers were punched, kicked and beaten with bamboo sticks while a preacher, identified only as A Tik, “was seriously injured.” (BosNewsLife)

TEAR GAS INTERRUPTS NEW YEAR’S EVE WORSHIP SERVICE IN SUDAN

A New Year’s Eve worship service in Sudan was interrupted when police fired tear gas grenades inside the Episcopal All Saints’ Cathedral in Khartoum. Many worshipers were injured and six were hospitalized after the attack, launched 20 minutes after the start of the service. “There were nine gas grenades shot into the crowd of more than 500 worshipers, including such eminent people as Abel Alair, the former vice president of Sudan,” reported Paul Ciniraj of Salem Voice Ministries. Alair’s wife and another high official were among the injured, including someone burned by a plastic chair that caught fire in the explosions. Several members of the congregation were beaten by baton-wielding policemen as they fled the building. No official explanation for the attack was offered, but the Arabic-language newspaper, Al-Sudani, reported that police were pursuing a man with a knife who fled into the worshipers who were gathered outside the door in order to hide.
