79-letá Lois Anderson, bývalá misionářka Americké presbyteriánské církve a její 52-letá dcera Zelda White byly zastřeleny v sobotu 27. ledna. Její další dcera Sylvia Moller a její manžel Alexander, kteří seděli vzadu, přežili.

Todd Nettleton z Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) řekl, „Prezident Hugo Chavez získává téměř diktátorskou moc nad zemí. MAN TRYING TO TRADE VICKS VAPORUB FOR HAITIAN WATER WELL

A man in rural Saskatchewan, Canada, is using a website to trade a container of Vicks VapoRub for the construction of a water well in Haiti. At least that’s his hope. Doug Wildman started a website called Waterblogged with a container of Vicks VapoRub he happened to have sitting on his desk. On Monday, Jan.8, he offered to trade it for something better. “I’m going to keep on trading until I can afford to buy a well for a village in Haiti,” he wrote. “So what do you say? Do you have something lying around the house that you want to trade?” Wildman said that a well costs the equivalent of about US$850. Since that time the trades have been coming in. Currently up for trade is a 1980 Honda motorcycle valued around US$600, offered by a youth pastor in Minnesota. Wildman heard about the Haitians’ need for clean water about a year ago but thought, “What difference could one man from rural Saskatchewan make? So I listened to reason for about a year.” (Evangelical News/Covenant News)

Downlinks have been installed in Tortue Island, Pignon and Beaumont, and at least two more are planned. HCJB Global Voice also helped partner World Gospel Mission with a small station in Port-au-Prince.

UPDATE: INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO KENYAN CARJACKING DEATHS

On Thursday, Feb. 1, Kenyan police continued the investigation into the murders of two American missionaries who were shot and killed last weekend in a carjacking outside of Nairobi. Lois Anderson, 79, a retired missionary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and her daughter, Zelda White, 52, were shot and killed Saturday, Jan. 27. Another daughter, Sylvia Moller, and her husband, Alexander, were reportedly in the back seat but survived. The mother’s husband, Rev. Bill Anderson, was believed to be in the car or walking toward it when the assault occurred. The Andersons, who had retired to South Carolina after four decades of service in East Africa, were in Kenya for a family reunion when the slayings occurred. White, who was driving the vehicle, was a seminary student and wife of Craig White, an employee of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The attackers escaped with the vehicle but soon abandoned it. Two of the suspects were reportedly killed by police, but security forces were still hunting for others involved in the carjacking. Both women are to be buried in Kenya on Friday, Feb. 2. LOCAL BELIEVERS LAUNCH TUNISIA’S FIRST CHRISTIAN TV SERIES

Arab Vision Christian television station has started its 10th anniversary year with the launch of the first-ever Tunisian Christian TV series. After unexpected delays and setbacks, the series, made by Tunisians still living within their country, was recorded in partnership with Focus Media in Malta. The show’s producer reported, “Progress was slow at times. It felt like a spiritual battle with things going wrong and everyone getting sick during the recording sessions. We had to pray together every day to overcome the daily challenges.” International Director Abu Banaat said the hard work was not in vain. “To have produced the first-ever TV programs with Tunisian Christians who actually live in Tunisia is thrilling. Never before were Tunisian believers prepared to so publicly confess their faith. And they have more dreams and ideas for new programs in the near future. I believe that for the church of Tunisia this is a new dawn.” The organization is also working on a Moroccan TV series based on the Sermon on the Mount. (Arab Vision)

CHÁVEZ POWER GRAB MAKES VENEZUELAN CHRISTIANS NERVOUS

Venezuela’s Congress voted on Wednesday, Jan. 31 to give initial approval to a bill granting President Hugo Chávez powers to rule by decree for 18 months as he tries to force through his leftist nationalization agenda. It is uncertain what these types of changes could mean for Christians in that country. Todd Nettleton from Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) said, “President Hugo Chávez is gaining almost dictatorial powers over that country. He will be allowed to stay in office as long as he wants and basically rule the country by his decree.” Chávez already forced out one U.S. mission organization last year. While Nettleton wouldn’t say religious freedom is getting worse there, he added, “It’s definitely not on the upswing. It’ll be interesting to see if there are changes towards Venezuelan national Christians and the Venezuelan church itself now that Hugo Chávez has taken these powers.” VOM has not yet classified Venezuela as a restricted nation, but Nettleton said, “You just look at the evidence and you look at the past and you look at who Hugo Chávez’s friends are, it’s got to make you nervous if you have Christian workers in Venezuela.” (Mission Network News)

BAPTIST MISSION USES PODCAST TO RECRUIT STUDENT MISSIONARIES

The Southern Baptist International Mission Board (IMB) has joined the world of podcasting in an effort to get students more involved in international missions. Called podTask, the segment is updated weekly on iTunes and website thetask.org. “We [want] to provide . . . videos, stories and music for students to download and watch to encourage them that God is moving around the world, and He’s using students to reach the world,” said IMB’s Felicity Watson, host of the podTask. “We have the people if they will commit. We have the money if Christians will give. And we have a big God whose plan is for all people groups to worship Him. All of the ingredients are there, and we want students to be motivated through the podTask to own their destiny to finish the Great Commission.” (Baptist Press)
