Eritrea: tři křesťané propuštěni, jeden uvězněn.
Zdroj: Compass Direct News.

THREE CHRISTIANS RELEASED, ONE ARRESTED IN ERITREA

Source: Compass Direct News
One Eritrean Christian was arrested while three others were released just days afterward. Pastor Habtom Tesfamichel, 57 and one of the founders of the Full Gospel Church, was taken into custody on January 23 in Asmara and placed in the Wongel Mermera prison where nearly two dozen other Christian pastors and priests are held. Soon after Tesfamichel was arrested, Pastor Simon Tsegay and church administrator Gebremichel Yohannes from the Kale Hiwot Church were released after posting bail. The two had been interrogated and arrested last September in the town of Adi-Tezlezan, 20 miles north of Asmara, over use of the church building which had previously been closed by government order. Soon after the release of the Tsegay and Yohannes, Full Gospel Church Pastor Fanuel Mihreteab was freed from Sempel Prison in Asmara, two full years after his arrest in January 2005 in the town of Dekemhare. Like Tsegay and Yohannes, Mihreteab was forced to surrender property deeds to guarantee his required bail.

COMEDY NIGHT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SERIOUS HUNGER WORLDWIDE

Source: Christian Newswire
A comedy fundraiser event will be using laughs to raise funds to fight global hunger and poverty. On April 20, World Vision and Outreach Comedy will partner together with some of today’s top comedians for a live comedy simulcast broadcast over the Church Communications Network (CCN). Churches of all sizes that own CCN equipment can share in the broadcast while comedians Thor Ramsey, Phil DiTommaso and Donna East, who have been featured on shows like The Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, use the universal appeal of humor to raise awareness of the sobering realities of poverty, disease and hunger. “One of the greatest challenges facing Christian churches today is how to communicate issues of global concern to the church in a way that will help them respond to this overwhelming need,” says Paul Pickard, General Manager of Outreach Events. "At the same time, this event will be an excellent outreach tool for churches--connecting with people in their communities who would otherwise never enter a church." After the comedy act, event organizers will show a World Vision video, offering an opportunity for people to respond to the needs presented.

BULGARIAN ORTHODOXY ASKS EUROPEAN UNION FOR CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Source: BosNewsLife
Officials of the Alternate Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will ask European parliamentarians to pressure Bulgaria's government to return church properties and address the forcible expulsion of 160 priests from their churches and monasteries, representatives said Friday, February 9. The Alternate Synod does not recognize the leadership of Patriarch Maxim, who was appointed as the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church under the Communist regime in the 1970s.The group was forced out of their churches on July 21, 2004, after the State Prosecutor decreed that their churches and monasteries should be turned over to the segment of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church under Patriarch Maxim. Police carried out the expulsion in a coordinated action across the country. A number of priests and laypeople were reportedly beaten in that process. “Since the expulsions, the priests have been forced to hold services for their congregations in the open air which, over the winter, means freezing temperatures, snow and rain,” said Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW). Bulgaria’s recent entry into the European Union has led the priests to seek pressure from parliamentarians to resolve the issue.

Nearly 18 months after Hurricane Katrina swept over the Gulf Coast, Habitat for Humanity is closing in on its initial 1,000-house goal to help low-income families displaced by the storm. According to a Religion News Service release, to date more than 700 homes have been built or are under construction with plans to meet the organization’s goal of having its first 1,000 houses complete or under construction by mid-summer. Once those homes are completed, Habitat has already begun to acquire land and plan for the next 1,000 homes, which will help ensure that local affiliates will be able to deliver affordable houses to qualifying low-income families. “I am proud of the exceptional work that dedicated Habitat for Humanity affiliates, volunteers, supporters and employees are doing in the Gulf Coast recovery,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International.

NEW PARALLEL BIBLE PROVIDES ANOTHER TOOL FOR IN-DEPTH STUDY

Source: Christian Newswire
A new tool for in-depth Bible study is now available from Thomas Nelson Publishers. Nelson’s new Parallel Study Bible is the first Bible to include commentary study notes alongside three of the most popular Bible translations, allowing comparisons of different texts as well as comprehensive study notes in a parallel format. Aligned in an easy-to-use four-column setting on facing pages, the Parallel Study Bible offers the accuracy of the New King James Version with the accessibility of the New Century Version, which is viewed as the easiest-to-read translation, and the story-style of The Message – today's most popular paraphrase. Alongside this is a concise abridgement of the annotations and study notes from the award-winning NKJV Study Bible. The Bible also includes book introductions, a concordance and a passage about the harmony of the Gospels that shows how similar passages of the gospels relate to each other.
