Zdroj: Christianity Today, Religion Today

DUTCH REPLICA OF NOAH’S ARK OPENS DOORS FOR EVANGELISM

Source: BBC News
A half-sized replica of the biblical Noah’s Ark built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers opened its doors on Saturday, April 28, after almost two years of construction, most of it by Huibers himself. The ark, in the town of Schagen, Netherlands, is 150 cubits (225 feet) long (half the length of Noah’s) and three stories high. A cubit is about 18 inches long. Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras and bison are included in the ark’s interior along with a 50-seat theater. Huibers, a contractor, built the ark out of cedar and pine as biblical scholars still aren’t exactly sure what gopher wood is. Huibers began the project in May 2005, 13 years after having a dream that the Netherlands was being flooded. “The next day I found a book about Noah’s Ark in the local bookshop, and since then my dream has been to build the ark,” he said. Ark visitor Mary Louise Starosciak told the Associated Press, “I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big.”

Imprisoned Baptist leader Vyacheslav Kalataevsky may soon go on trial in the Central Asian nation of Turkmenistan. Kalataevsky was born in Turkmenbashi (formerly known as Krasnovodsk) but holds a Ukrainian passport. He was arrested on Monday, March 12, for an alleged illegal border crossing six years ago. Kalataevsky’s wife, Valentina Kalataevskaya, said she has not seen her husband since his arrest but believes he is being held in Prison No. 5 in Turkmenbashi. She insists he is being punished for his religious activity. “Although officials don’t mention it, I believe there is a religious motivation to the case,” she said. “They won’t take into account that he was expelled across the border into Kazakhstan in 2001 as a punishment for preaching the gospel.” Kalataevsky, a leading member of the local congregation of the Council of Churches Baptists, was deported in 2001 as part of a nationwide campaign to expel all prominent foreign citizens in numerous religious communities. At that time, all non-Muslim and non-Russian Orthodox religious activity was illegal in Turkmenistan. The Council of Churches Baptists remains illegal, refusing on principle to be registered.

Rev. Dr. John Stott, 86, announced that he will retire from public ministry after fulfilling one final speaking engagement at the upcoming Keswick Convention in the U.K. in July. Billy Graham has called Stott “the most respected clergyman in the world today,” and John Pollock described him as “in effect the theological leader of world evangelicalism.” Most widely known for his theological writings, Stott’s best-known work, Basic Christianity, has sold 2 million copies and has been translated into more than 60 languages. His prominence within North American evangelicalism was reflected in his role as Bible expositor on six occasions at the triennial Urbana student mission convention organized by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Stott’s links with students worldwide were strengthened by his leading of some 50 university missions worldwide between 1952 and 1977. He also serves as vice president of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students from 1995 to 2003. Stott’s media release states that he will be moving from his apartment in London, where he has lived for more than 30 years, to a retirement community for Anglican clergy in southern England.

On Sunday, April 22, Pastor Walter Massey, the headmaster of a Christian school, was beaten in the capital of Rajasthan, a northwestern Indian state known as the “land of kings.” The incident took place in full daylight about 1,000 feet away from the Rajasthan Chief Minister’s residence and was fully covered by local television cameras. Massey was shown bleeding from the face and head while inside his house. Masked Sangh Parivar fanatics repeatedly beat him with sticks and iron rods while his wife, Joyce, and their children watched helplessly. He was admitted at the emergency ward of Sawai Man Singh Medical College Hospital at Jaipur, suffering with severe external and internal injuries. About 20 to 25 Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) and Bajrang Dal activists forcibly entered Massey’s house and vandalized his property. While the identities of Masey’s attackers have not been confirmed yet, Jaipur police have made five arrests in the case and expect to make additional arrests. They are also looking into the media’s role in fueling the attack.

DAREDEVIL EVEL KNIEVEL’S TESTIMONY SPARKS IMPROMPTU BAPTISMS

Sources: Christianity Today, Religion Today
According to a story on Christianity Today.com, on Palm Sunday, hundreds responded to former daredevil Robert “Evel” Knievel’s testimony by asking to be baptized on the spot at Crystal Cathedral. Speaking alongside Rev. Robert H. Schuller, Knievel told the congregation in Orange County, Calif., how he had refused for 68 years to accept Jesus Christ as Lord because he didn’t want to surrender his lifestyle. “I don’t know why I fought it so hard,” he said. “I just did.” Relating events that occurred during Daytona Bike Week this March, Knievel said, “I don’t know what in the world happened. I don’t know if it was the power of the prayer or God Himself, but it just reached out, either while I was driving or walking down the sidewalk or sleeping, and it just . . . the power of God in Jesus just grabbed me. . . . All of a sudden, I just believed in Jesus Christ. I did, I believed in Him! I rose up in bed and, I was by myself, and I said, ‘Devil, Devil, you bastard you, get away from me. I cast you out of my life.’ I just got on my knees and prayed that God would put his arms around me and never, ever, ever let me go.” Pastor Robert A. Schuller, who took over for his father last year, looked across the congregation and noticed many people were sobbing. Unable to continue with the service’s script, an impromptu baptismal service began where it’s estimated between 500 and 800 people committed or rededicated their lives to God.
