Zdroj: The Barna Group, Evangelical News

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, TO HOST LAUSANNE III CONFERENCE IN 2010

In what promises to be an historic watershed for evangelical Christianity and worldwide missions, the third International Congress on World Evangelization will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, Oct. 16-25, 2010. “Lausanne III: Cape Town 2010,” organized by the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, will gather mission and church leaders from around the world to address challenges and opportunities with respect to world evangelization that are before the church. Lausanne I was held in 1974 in Lausanne, Switzerland, under the leadership of evangelist Billy Graham. It drew more than 2,700 evangelical leaders from 150 countries. The focus of the meeting was both practical and theological, producing The Lausanne Covenant, a document that provides theological underpinnings for intentional collaborative world evangelization. In 1989 3,600 leaders from 190 nations attended Lausanne II in Manila, Philippines. The resulting Manila Manifesto reaffirmed and expanded upon the Lausanne Covenant and the call to “Proclaim Christ Until He Comes.” The selection of Cape Town has historic significance as William Carey, considered the father of modern missions, first proposed an international missionary conference to be held there in 1810.

Officials say that about 95 percent of the buildings in Greensburg, Kan., were destroyed, and at least nine people were killed by a powerful tornado that struck the town on Friday, May 4. The F5-strength tornado had a track spanning 1.7 miles wide and 22 miles long with winds topping 205 mph. Baptist Press reported that all of the churches in the town were destroyed as well as every business on Main Street. Virtually none of the town’s 1,500 residents were left untouched. The Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists has set up a feeding unit in nearby Haviland where many of the victims have taken shelter. The Assemblies of God church, Lighthouse Worship Center, was one that did not escape the twister’s destructive force. Church member Jonathan Wright said the building was demolished and the parsonage heavily damaged -- considered a total loss. “However, everyone in the church has been accounted for,” he said. “There was no loss of life or major injuries to congregation members . . . but over half have lost their homes.” After declaring Greensburg a disaster area, President George W. Bush said, “There’s a certain spirit in the Midwest of our country, a pioneer spirit that still exists, and I’m confident this community will be rebuilt.”

A Vietnamese Christian from the Degar Montagnard minority group who worshiped in a house church in the nation’s central highlands was freed Monday, May 7, after weeks of imprisonment and torture, fellow believers said. The Montagnard Foundation Inc. (MFI) reported that 29-year-old Rcom Gliu from Plei Del village in Gia Lai province was released from prison “after being repeatedly tortured” in the last two months. “Security forces also threatened him and his family members with torture and imprisonment if he attends further house church prayer meetings or reports his situation to the international community,” MFI reported. Gliu’s latest period of imprisonment began on Thursday, April 5, when security forces detained him while he was walking with his wife and 3-year-old child to their farm, only a few hundred yards from their house. After police took him into custody, MFI claims he was “mercilessly tortured” with martial arts techniques and batons, rendering him unconscious more than once.

Officials in the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan are claiming that Protestant Pastor Dmitry Shestakov has voluntarily renounced his right to an appeal and because of poor health is pleading to be transferred to his place of sentence. However, friends of Shestakov, 38, who was sentenced to four years in a work camp on March 9, expressed concern about this claim. Forum 18 News Service reported that some people in the country assumed that Shestakov was forced to sign the document renouncing his right to an appeal. They point out that he had lodged an appeal on March 16 against his sentence of “incitement to religious hatred,” “running an illegal religious organization” and “distributing materials promoting religious extremism.” He was captured Jan. 21 by secret police who visited him in his thriving Full Gospel Church in the tense town of Andijan. There is also speculation that Shestakov’s health is deteriorating since his lawyer has not been allowed to see him despite repeated requests. He is expected to be sent swiftly to a penal colony to begin his four-year sentence.

SURVEY: MOMS ARE MOST SPIRITUALLY ACTIVE SEGMENT IN THE U.S.

Sources: The Barna Group, Evangelical News
A new Barna study indicates that women who are raising children are among the most faith-minded and spiritually active segments of the U.S. population. The study explored faith-related activities, commitments and perspectives, relying upon nationally representative interviews among more than 10,000 adults and nearly 2,000 women who are parenting children under the age of 18. The study shows that more than three-quarters of moms identify “family” to be their highest priority. At the same time, a majority of mothers strongly agree that their faith is very important in their life. In contrast, fathers also tend to list family as their top priority in life, yet they are much less likely to equally attribute importance to faith. Barna Group President David Kinnaman who directed the study clarified the role of gender in shaping a person’s spiritual profile. “Whether they are a parent or not, women in America have high levels of spiritual sensitivity and engagement,” he said. ”Men generally lag behind the spirituality of women.”

CORRECTION: A headline in Monday’s update should have said that it was Iraqi refugees who were seeking a third country after encountering violence in Turkey.
