THOUSANDS ATTEND MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR JERRY FALWELL

Source: Baptist Press
Thousands thronged Lynchburg, Va., and the facilities of Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University for the May 22 memorial service for Jerry Falwell. A personal statement from President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush was read by Tim Boegleinm, special assistant to the president, offering the Bush’s sympathies and saying Falwell was a man who “cherished faith, family and freedom.” Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, also addressed the crowd, calling Falwell “a prophet of our generation.” As his address continued, Graham said, “People have asked me, ‘Franklin, did you agree with Jerry Falwell?’ Every time he opened the Bible I agreed with Jerry Falwell.” Graham called Falwell “controversial,” then listed a litany of social issues championed by Falwell, such as the sanctity of marriage and human life. Graham continued, “He believed in the Gospel. That's controversial.” The service ended with a salvation message, allowing an opportunity for those present to dedicate their lives to Jesus. Falwell's interment was private. Falwell, who had a history of heart problems, died May 15, 2007 at age 73.

RELIEF EFFORTS DERAILED BY FIGHTING IN LEBANON

Lebanon's militants offered a truce in order to get humanitarian aid into the embattled refugee camp, Nahr el-Bared, but the United Nations' aid convoy did not go well. Speaking from Beirut, World Vision's coordinator in Lebanon, Ruba Khoury, said, “The UN convoy was entering the camp, and around 4:30 local time in Lebanon it was reported that the convoy had been attacked. The situation is increasingly making the aid more difficult to access for the children, for the vulnerable.” At last report, heavy fire was being traded again between the government forces and Fatah al-Islam fighters. However, thousands used the brief lull in the fighting to flee Nahr el-Bared and head for another camp located a few miles to the south of Tripoli. World Vision’s activities are currently suspended, but they will begin delivering aid again as soon as safe passage can be assured. He says their presence brought hope and peace in the midst of the fighting. “Jesus did not discriminate between any target group. He served whoever needed the help. This is our prime testimony.” World Vision donors support 12,600 children in Lebanon.

UPDATE: CHALDEAN PRIEST RELEASED IN IRAQ

Source: Compass Direct News
Chaldean Priest Nawzat Hanna, who was kidnapped Saturday morning, May 19, as he left the home of a sick parishioner, was released by his captors at 9:30pm Monday night. Chaldean Auxiliary Bishop Shlemon Warduni said from Baghdad that he had personally collected Hanna from his captors. Warduni was directed “here and there” around the city for about an hour while interacting with Hanna’s captors by telephone. Refraining from mentioning the exact location, Warduni explained that after he stopped his car he recognized Hanna coming towards him. “He came crying and saying, ‘Oh Father, Monsignor, thank you, thank God,’” Warduni said that Hanna had undergone a “little bit” of torture, but that he had not been hospitalized. Warduni said that Hanna’s kidnapping may force many of the priest’s flock to leave Baghdad’s Baladiyat neighborhood. “[When a priest is abducted] it is very bad because the people say, ‘If the priest is gone, what are we staying here for?’”

NEW AMITY BIBLE PRINTING PRESS SITE UNDERWAY IN CHINA

On a return visit to Nanjing, China last week, Daniel Willis, CEO of the Bible Society of New South Wales (Australia) inspected progress on the new site for the Amity Printing Press. “Last October, the block was vacant, apart from a huge sign,” he said. “Now you can see the shape of the new buildings with form work and support columns in place.” The press is expected to be operational by the end of 2007. The 21 acre site is part of a new industrial development in Nanjing, a city of over 6 million people. A new giant press, worth over $4 million US is due for delivery from the UK in September. The original Amity printing site began printing in 1987. According to Willis, over that 20 year period, the press has printed 50 million Bibles and New Testaments, 40 million of which were Chinese language Bibles distributed in China. “The new press will have a capacity of 1 million Bibles a month and with the growth of the Church in China, this capacity will well and truly be needed,” he said. “I also visited churches in China’s north-east where I was told there was an increasing interest in the Bible – the new Amity Press will ensure this interest can be met with Bibles and New Testaments.”

CREATION MUSEUM DRAWS SECULAR SCIENTIFIC CRITICISM BEFORE OPENING

Sources: Religion Today, Associated Press
According to a story by the Associated Press, the brand new $27 million Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky has already created enough pushback from the secular scientific community that two petitions are circulating. The Creation Museum, built by the nonprofit ministry Answers in Genesis (AiG) with private donations, tells a biblical version of the Earth's history. The educators say its exhibits lack scientific evidence. “When they try to confuse [kids] about what is science and what isn't science, scientists have an obligation to speak out,” said Lawrence Krauss, Professor of Physics at Case Western Reserve University. “There's no doubt these are documented lies.” The other petition cites “scientifically inaccurate” exhibits in the museum. In response, AiG founder Ken Ham urged critics to visit before judging, adding that most natural-history museums and textbooks are devoted to teaching evolution. Visitors to the museum, a few miles from Cincinnati, will be able to watch the story of creation unfold in a 180-seat special-effects theater, see a 40-foot-tall re-creation of a section of Noah’s Ark and stare into the jaws of robotic dinosaurs. The Creation Museum is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend.
