Zranění utrpěl během „těžkého mučení vietnamskými policisty a vězeňskými úředníky.“ Podle MFI byl Suoi zadržen 14. září 2005, protože odmítl vstoupit do oficiální církve a skončit s „nepovolenými“ domácími sborovými aktivitami. „Policisté ho svázali a předvedli před ostatní vesničany. Začali ho bít a kopat.“ Údajně použili elektrošoky „a zbili ho obušky do bezvědomí,“ načež ho hodili do auta a odvezli do vězení v provincii Daknong. V květnu 2007 „bylo jeho zdraví tak podlomeno, že už nemohl chodit ani stát,“ uvedla MFI. 27. května 2007 jej tajná policie přivezla zpět k jeho manželce a rodičům, kteří „ho skoro nepoznali,“ jak byl zmučený. Pod tlakem rodiny jej policie převezla do nemocnice v provincii Doknong, kde ráno 29. května zemřel. Rodina jej týž den pohřbila. Zdroj: BosNewsLife

VIETNAMESE CHRISTIAN DIES AFTER YEARS OF TORTURE, PERSECUTION

Source: BosNewsLife
The Montagnard Foundation Incorporated (MFI), which represents Degar Montagnard Christians in Vietnam’s central highlands, released info on Wednesday, June 6 saying 30-year-old Dieu Suoi died of injuries on May 31, due to “severe torture he received from Vietnamese police and prison officials.” He was initially detained on September 14, 2005, because he refused to join the official church and to end his “illegal” house church activities, MFI said. “The police tied him up and brought him in front of the villagers.[They] began striking him with their hands and kicked him with their boots.” Police allegedly gave him electrical shocks “and beat him with batons until he was unconscious,” before throwing him in their truck and taking him to a prison in Daknong province. By May 2007 “his health deteriorated to the point he could no longer walk or stand upright,” MFI said. On May 27, 2007 security police brought him back to his wife and parents who could “barely recognize him” because of the torture. Under pressure police took him to a hospital in Daknong province, where he died two days later on the morning of May 29, 2007. He was buried by his family the next day.

RALLY CONDEMNS SEXUAL ABUSE OF PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN YOUTH

Source: Assist News Service
Around 150 Christian residents of Mandi Bahawaldin, Pakistan, took part in a rally to protest against the alleged rape and sodomy of a Christian youth on the night of June 2. A Christian youth named Imran was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse by several Muslim men after the youth picked a quarrel with his Muslim friend, Naveed. On Wednesday, June 13, a protest rally and march were sponsored by the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA). The enraged Christians expressed their outrage against the incident by raising slogans against the Medical Superintendent and the accused. Some believe that fear of the repercussions may have limited the number of participants. “There are some 1000 Christian families residing in the district but only 150 Christians turned up for the rally fearing that the Police would arrest them,” APMA activist Arshad Gill said.

ASIAN ACCESS PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN TO FOCUS ON LAUSANNE COMMITTEE

Source: Christian Newswire
Asian Access, an evangelical mission organization that develops leaders and serves as a catalyst to multiply churches, announced today that its third president, the Rev. S. Douglas Birdsall, will step down on Sept. 30 to devote full time to his position as executive international chair of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelism (LCWE). “After much thought and prayer, I realized that I could no longer effectively lead both organizations,” Birdsall said. “I remain committed to the people and the vision of Asian Access. I am grateful for the evidence of God's providence in using everything I've experienced up to this point to prepare me for this new role with Lausanne. I want to give it my all. I also realize that Asian Access is at a point in its growth where it needs the undivided time and passion of a new leader who can take the ministry forward.” Birdsall will switch his focus to the Lausanne Committee, which is preparing for an International Congress on World Evangelization that will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October 2010. The Congress will be modeled after the 1974 Lausanne Congress, convened by Rev. Billy Graham.

STUDY: ATHEISTS, AGNOSTICS MAKE UP 9 PERCENT OF AMERICANS

Source: Religion Today
The Christian Post reports that a new study on America's atheists and agnostics by the Barna Group found a significant gap between the “no-faith” group and believers, as well as some commonalities. Self-identified atheists and agnostics make up only 9 percent of the American adult population, roughly 20 million people out of 220 million adults. Of those, only about 5 million staunchly reject the existence of God. 56 percent of “no-faith” Americans agree that radical Christianity is just as threatening in America as is radical Islam, which coincides with 63 percent of “active-faith” Americans perceiving that the nation is becoming more hostile toward Christianity. However, “Neither the 20 million no-faith adults nor the 58 million active-faith Christians are as internally consistent as those who write and speak on behalf of their groups make them out to be,” said David Kinnaman, president of The Barna Group.
