NORTH KOREA PERSECUTION REPORT COINCIDES WITH CALL TO PRAYER

Sources: Religion Today, Assist News Service
Following the release of a major report on human rights abuses in North Korea, Christians and churches around the world are being asked to pray for North Korea during a Global Week of Prayer that begins today (June 25). This year is particularly significant as it marks 100 years since the 1907 Pyongyang Great Revival in Korea. A major report by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) released this week concludes that North Korea’s severe human rights abuses constitute crimes against humanity. The report also presents evidence of the deliberate annihilation of Christians and identifies indicators of genocide against Christians in North Korea. “The contrast between the spiritual climate in North Korea today and 100 years ago could not be starker,” said CSW National Director Stuart Windsor. “It is vital that the church awakens to the urgent need to pray for North Korea. We pray that as the church rises up on behalf of its beleaguered brothers and sisters, a tidal wave of prayer will sweep away the darkness and usher in the light and love of God once again.”

HYMN EMPHASIS BOOSTS INTEREST IN HOME GROUPS IN NEW ZEALAND

John Clayton, a pastor at Pakuranga Christian Fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, said he was inspired to start home groups in which people could learn from the hymn writers and hymns after reading an article in The Challenge Weekly. “I was challenged by the article that said among other things -- don’t throw away your hymnbooks. We have a rich heritage.” Clayton held the first home group at his house on Easter Saturday and although he was worried about how many would attend, 12 turned up. Because it was Easter, attendees interposed readings and hymns with a short item on John Newton. Since then two more home groups have been added, the latest of which attracted an increasing number of Asians and newer Christians. One attendee said it was a wonderful idea to have such a home group because the hymns had great meaning for her. “I was converted at the age of 12 and attended a church where we were wonderfully taught and grounded in the Scriptures,” she said. “Alongside that, these hymns were sung with awe and reverence and not only uplifted the spirit, but taught the fundamentals and foundations of our faith.”

YOUNG CHRISTIAN KILLED, 2 FLEE FOR THEIR LIVES IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO

The Voice of the Martyrs reported that a Christian named Lorenzo López, 20, was killed by local tribal people in the region of San Juan Camula in southern Mexico’s Chiapas state on Monday, June 11. López, along with his brother, Juan, and their cousin, Juan Díaz Méndez, were visiting the area in order to repay a debt to a local man. Not finding the man at home, they decided to leave but were surrounded by approximately 30 local people who demanded to know why they were in the area. The crowd refused to believe their explanation, suspecting them of being evangelists and beat them. Juan López and his cousin were able to flee, but Lorenzo was captured, tortured, stoned and hanged. Two days later his body was found buried at the attack site.

HINDUS BURN CHRISTIAN BOOKS TO PROTEST ALLEGED CONVERSIONS

Hindu activists burned 500 copies of a book called The Life History of Jesus Christ that they had confiscated from a girls primary school in Siddapur in southern India’s Karnataka state on Monday, June 18. The mob, drawn from Hindu Jagarana Vedike (Hindu Forum for Revival) and Bharatiya Janata Party (India's largest political party), claimed the books were being used to convert school children to Christianity. Protests were made both in Siddapur and Sirsi in Karnataka State, India, after the activists got information about books being distributed in some schools. Based on this information, they went to the girls’ school in Siddapur and found the books in five cardboard boxes and brought them out to the bus stand and then protested by burning them. About 10 boxes had arrived to the school for distribution and five of boxes had already been distributed, an education authority spokesperson said.

‘CONTEMPLATIVE KNITTING’ GIVES RESOURCE FOR PRAYER, MEDITATION

Source: Knit-to-Pray
A Christian ministry is offering an unusual way to pray and meditate through Scripture while knitting. Suzanne Harker, founder and director of Knit–to-Pray and Trinity Shawls, has developed a way to pray, meditate and reflect on Bible readings while knitting in solitude and in groups. A new booklet series called “Knit-to-Pray with Martha and Mary” offers bi-fold pages with both knitting instructions and prayer guidelines. When a shawl is completed, it may be used to create “sacred space” for the knitter or be given to a friend to continue the journey of prayer, reflection, meditation and contemplating Scripture passages. Harker believes many knitters instinctively use the repetitive movement of knitting to quiet and refresh themselves. The booklet series is a way to guide knitters in a way of contemplative knitting that taps that instinct.
