SAUDI KING CALLS FOR DIALOGUE AMONG MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS

Source: Christian Post
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia called for a dialogue among monotheistic religions Monday, March 24, marking a first for the ultra-conservative Muslim nation. “I ask representatives of all the monotheistic religions to meet with their brothers in faith,” Abdullah told delegates to a seminar on “Dialogue Among Civilizations Between Japan and the Islamic World,” reported the SPA, the official Saudi Press Agency. “If God wills it, we will then meet with our brothers from other religions, including those of the Torah and the Gospel . . . to come up with ways to safeguard humanity,” he added. Abdullah said the country’s top clerics have given him approval to pursue his idea and that he plans to get the opinion of Muslim leaders from other countries. The Saudi king said he intends to address the U.N. on the subject. “We have lost sincerity, morals, fidelity and attachment to our religions and to humanity,” Abdullah said. He also decried the “disintegration of the family and the rise of atheism in the world -- a frightening phenomenon that all religions must confront and vanquish.” Abdullah’s message of tolerance comes amid renewed religious tensions regarding the two-year-old controversy regarding Danish cartoons deemed by Muslims to be insulting.

14 EVANGELISTS FROM INDIA STUCK IN BANGLADESHI JAIL

Source: Compass Direct News
A group of Christians from India are languishing in a Bangladeshi prison even after finishing a three-month jail term for unknowingly overstepping an unmarked border between the two countries as they proclaimed Christ. Bangladeshi authorities say officials from India have not responded to requests to undertake the proper protocol for their release. The 14 evangelists were detained five months ago as they unknowingly trekked inside Bangladeshi territory near the Roma area of Bandarban hill district about 170 miles southeast of the capital. The evangelists -- including four women, a 51-year-old man and some young people -- were arrested for border trespass at a point where mountains obscure the border. The Christians were sentenced to three months of prison, said the prison’s inspector general, Zakir Hasan. While their sentence was completed as of Feb. 28, Indian officials have not yet taken the steps to allow the Christians to repatriate back to India. While Bangladesh says they are “very much willing” to send the evangelists back, Hasan said, “If their [India’s] high commission does not take any initiative about their repatriation, they will be in jail [indefinitely].”

MUSLIMS PURCHASE ARABIC BIBLES AT BOOK FAIR IN EGYPT

Source: Mission Network News
Many Muslims purchased easy-to-read Arabic New Testaments at the International Book Fair in Cairo, Egypt, earlier this month. This may be the largest book fair of its kind in the Middle East. First held in 1969, it’s a place where exhibitors, authors, buyers and publishers can come to learn about new titles being published with a focus on the Arabic language. During this year’s event, World Bible Translation Center (WBTC) missionaries were talking to people who asked them about the Bible and Jesus. According to police reports, their willingness to share the gospel resulted in the arrest of one team member. He was jailed but later released. Team members said the situation reminded them of the experience the apostles had in Acts 5 when they were arrested for teaching God’s Word to the people.

UPDATE: BAPTIST PASTOR FREED, PARDONED FROM AZERBAIJAN PRISON

Source: Forum 18 News Service
The Central Asian nation of Azerbaijan freed Baptist Pastor Zaur Balaev on Wednesday, March 19, after nearly a year in jail. Balaev was arrested in May 2007 and sentenced three months later on charges of using violence against state representatives, an accusation church members denied. Balaev was pardoned under a March 18 decree published on Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliev’s official website which pardoned 58 prisoners and reduced the sentence of one other. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was among those who appealed for Balaev’s release, writing to Aliev on Feb. 15. “It’s a great joy to be free,” Balaev said after his release. Since Balaev’s jailing, a number of other Protestants have been threatened with jail, but so far these threats have not been carried out. Ilya Zenchenko, head of the Baptist Union, welcomed Balaev’s release. “We thank God and those who prayed and supported Zaur,” he said. “But there is a lot more work still to be done to defend religious freedom in Azerbaijan.” State officials have refused to say whether Balaev and his congregation will be safe from future harassment.

Children in Malawi have a new way to learn about Christ. The children’s version of the “JESUS” film is now available in the Chichewa language. Acted out by African children, organizers expect the production will be used for evangelism in schools and children’s ministries in various churches and organizations nationwide. “”We will use this tool as a way of transforming the lives of our children in this nation,” said Tinge Msusa of the “JESUS” film in Malawi.

EXTREMISTS BEAT 16 CHRISTIANS DURING 2 EASTER SERVICES IN INDIA

Source: Compass Direct News
Hindu nationalist extremists stormed two Easter Sunday services and beat at least 16 Christians, including two pastors in southern India’s Karnataka’s state. A mob of more than 150 Hindus launched an attack on a Pentecostal church in the Shimoga district at 9 a.m., Sunday, March 23, reported the Global Council of Indian Christians. The attackers accused the church of “forced” conversions without any evidence for the charge and beat 35-year-old Pastor Mandya Nagraj along with five others besides vandalizing church property. At 11:45 a.m. the same day at least 12 extremists led by a Hindu priest and an associate attacked the Grace Almighty Full Gospel Church in the state capital of Bangalore. The assailants beat the church’s pastor and nine believers, including a 17-year-old girl. Following the attack, the assailants tried unsuccessfully to register a complaint against the pastor for “forced” conversions. But police brokered a “compromise” between the attackers and the pastor, requiring him to leave the area.

AUDIO VERSION OF BIBLE REACHES MILITARY PERSONNEL VIA RADIO

Source: OneNewsNow
Men and women serving in the U.S. military and people around the world are now able to enjoy a popular audio version of the New Testament called, “The Word of Promise.” Released last October, it is a dramatization of the New King James Version of the New Testament. Thomas Nelson publishers recently took excerpts from the set and made them available in 90-second segments for international radio. The spots are played worldwide and also reach U.S. servicemen and women through the Armed Forces Radio Network as well as on satellite radio and the Internet. “We know that we’re impacting people just from the e-mails that we get every single day on it,” said Carl Amari, producer of the project. “It’s so much fun knowing that what we’re doing is really having an effect on people’s lives.”
