SCHOLAR: NEW FACE OF GLOBAL CHRISTIANITY WILL BE BLACK

Sources: Christian Post, Religion Today
Christianity has long been stereotyped as a “Western, white man’s religion,” but a prominent theologian said this image will soon drastically change. “The new face of Christianity will be the black woman,” Kwok Pui Lan, a professor at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., told an audience at Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky Thursday, March 27. As of last year Europe still had the largest number of Christians in the world -- 532 million -- followed by Latin America with 525 million and Africa at 417 million. But by 2025 Africa is projected to shoot up to 634.6 million Christians followed by Latin America at 634.1 million and Europe at 531 million. The U.S. had 223 million Christians in mid-2007 and is predicted to grow slightly to 252 million by 2025. Explaining Christianity’s boom in Africa, Rev. Samuel Kobia -- the first African general secretary of the World Council of Churches -- said late last year that Christianity is not seen as a “part-time” occupation in Africa in comparison to the U.S., but rather “permeates the whole life.”

MOB ASSAULTS CHRISTIAN FAMILY IN INDIA’S MADHYA PRADESH STATE

Source: Compass Direct News
Hindu extremists in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state beat the grandparents and aunt of a 15-year-old girl on Saturday, March 22, when her Christian family refused to allow the group to rape her. Drunk after attending a Hindu festival, nine members of the Hindu extremist group Bajrang Dal arrived at the home of Brij Gopal Saket in the village of Bahera, cursing and shouting anti-Christian slogans. They demanded that he turn over his daughter Urmila so they could abuse her. “I pleaded and reminded them that we are brothers from the same village and community,” Saket said. “Undeterred, they told me that by becoming a Christian I am no more of their community.” Saket managed to lock himself, his wife and his daughter inside their home, but the attackers, who have threatened to kill other members of the community unless they stop worshiping Christ, got hold of the girl’s grandparents and aunt while they were still outside and relentlessly beat them, “They hit them with rods, sticks and stones,” eyewitness Ram Mani reported. “Villagers gathered together to stop this brutal carnage.”

Two Baptists in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan have been handed large fines for peaceful religious activity within “unregistered religious organizations.” Pyotr Panafidin and Ivan Friesen were each fined the equivalent of nearly US$1,000 in separate cases. A third pastor, Dmitry Jantsen, who leads a Baptist congregation in Temirtau in the northern Karaganda region, said that he was summoned to the Temirtau Justice Department on Wednesday, March 12. Officials warned him that his congregation, along with several other Baptist congregations in Kazakhstan, would be closed down and he would be jailed. Present at the meeting and echoing the warning were Justice Ministry officials from the capital Astana and the Karaganda Regional Justice Department. One official, Serik Tlekbaev of the Justice Department, told Jantsen “not to try to appeal to international organizations such as the U.N. or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) because they will not be of any help to you.”

A Pentecostal pastor was killed inside a church in Massin in the southern Philippine province of Iloilo the night of Tuesday, March 18, according to police reports. No clear motive has been given. Pastor Armando Corio died in the hospital from stab wounds to the head and the chest. Eyewitnesses suspect that the murder was committed by Rizalde Cordero who was seen fleeing the church with a knife on the night of the murder. He remains at large. Both Catholics and Protestants are increasingly targeted by extremists and common bandits who kill for ideological reasons or the simple desire for money.

U.K. CATHEDRAL EVACUATED AFTER TOO MUCH ‘EASTER ZEAL’

Source: Assist News Service
An Easter celebration on Saturday, March 22, at the Anglican cathedral in Norwich, U.K., was a little too warm for comfort as candles set off fire alarms, forcing an evacuation of the historic building, reported the British website www.ekklesia.co.uk. The 400-strong congregation had lit candles to symbolize Jesus’ resurrection when the flames grew and fire alarms sounded. The congregation was ushered out, and the fire brigade arrived somewhat bemused, soon allowing the service to continue as normal. The cathedral was “filled with light from the candles and incense,” said Rev. Jan McFarlane of the diocese of Norwich. “Sadly, it was all a bit too much for the fire detection system, and halfway through the eucharistic prayer we were interrupted by the fire alarm and an automated voice telling us to evacuate the cathedral. Clearly, fire detection systems can’t cope with the resurrection of Jesus!”
