THOUSANDS ATTEND UNPRECEDENTED EASTER RALLY IN HINDU NEPAL

Source: BosNewsLife
Some 25,000 native Christians and onlookers attended an unprecedented Easter rally in Nepal, long known as the world’s only Hindu kingdom. The gathering, held in the capital Kathmandu, was arranged by local churches to promote Christianity in this Himalayan nation where minority Christians have long been oppressed, organizers said. People were seen holding banners heralding “the resurrection of Jesus Christ” during the downtown celebration which also included singing and dancing. Two key pastors preached during the gathering. The rally apparently aroused the curiosity of local Communist Party leaders who asked to meet with the Christian leaders. “It’s the right time to interact with different political groups because constituent assembly elections are near,” said one of the Christian leaders. Their names were withheld amid concerns they could become targets of anti-Christian activity. Churches described the event as “historic” and a result of previous mission work. A Maoist insurgency held the nation in hostage from 1996 to 2006, but amid the turmoil, churches in Nepal have grown exponentially. Estimates indicate there are more than 700,000 Christian believers in Nepal.

AUTHORITIES RELEASE INSTIGATOR OF ETHIOPIAN CHURCH ATTACKS

Source: Compass Direct News
Ethiopian judicial authorities have released a prominent local official accused of instigating deadly church assaults that left one Christian dead and 17 wounded last month. Local Christians confirmed that Hussein Beriso, house speaker of the Nensebo District Council, has been released on bail by a court in southern Ethiopia’s Oromo region. But 20 other Muslim suspects arrested after the machete attacks against members of two churches in the village of Nensebo Chebi on Sunday, March 2, remain jailed, a local source said. Four of the detainees have reportedly confessed that they participated in the planned raids against the Kale Hiwot and Birhane Wongel Baptist churches in Nensebo Chebi. Local Christians insist that Beriso was personally involved in “buying and distributing machetes” for Muslims involved in the simultaneous attacks which occurred during morning worship services in both churches. They also said he had made public comments against Christians in February calling for local Muslims to resist any attempts to convince them to leave Islam. According to a report from Open Doors, the Nensebo attack has drawn Christians in the predominantly Muslim-populated area closer together.

Source: Assist News Service
A Christian Pakistani girl has been falsely implicated in a theft case involving jewelry and other valuable goods worth an equivalent of US$4,170. Farzana, 16, had worked for three months as a domestic servant in the house of a Muslim man named Muhammad Abid in the city of Lahore, earning about US$8 a month. The trouble began for the impoverished Christian girl when her master, Muhammad Abid, and his wife went to see his relatives in the city of Garanwala. Abid told Farzana that he would inform her when he got back to his home. When Abid was on this visit, a neighbor informed him that the doors of his house were wide open, prompting him to hurry home. Upon returning, Abid lodged a theft case at the local police station, detailing the robbery. Abid called Farzana to resume her work on Thursday, March 27, and she was arrested by the police while on the way to her master’s house. The police also raided her house the same day and arrested her father and three brothers. They have since been released.

MANY MISSIONARY PLANES GROUNDED BY LACK OF AVIATION FUEL

Source: Assist News Service
With a fleet of 52 aircraft, Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) serves more than 800 Christian and non-profit agencies in remote areas as well as thousands of isolated people in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. But a shortage of high-octane aviation fuel, known as Avgas, has grounded many MAF missionary pilots. Because of the shortage, some 150 air strips are without service, said MAF President John Boyd. In response to the crisis, MAF is embarking on an aggressive 10-year plan to acquire 20 of the new Kodiak 100 aircraft which not only use jet fuel, which is more readily available and cheaper, the plane also is larger, flies faster and can still get in and out of small airstrips. “The aircraft we have now -- the Cessna 206 -- often can’t fly because we can’t get Avgas,” Boyd said. The Cessna has been the backbone of the MAF fleet for 60 years, but Avgas can cost up to $12 a gallon compared to $3.50 a gallon for jet fuel.

AFRICAN PASTOR THANKS WOMAN FOR DONATING HER WEDDING RING

Source: Christian Newswire
In 2006 Californian Ali Eastburn learned that children in Africa were becoming sick and dying because they had no clean water. Now, two years later, an African pastor is visiting Eastburn to thank her on behalf of his village for the unusual response she made to what she’d learned. On Eastburn’s finger two years ago was her diamond wedding ring, and she recognized that she could sell the ring to raise money to dig a well. Ali sold her wedding ring and founded With This Ring, a charitable organization seeking to provide the poor of Africa with clean drinking water while inviting other Western Christians to donate their wedding rings as well. Eastburn, executive director of With This Ring, will be joined by Pastor Asari from Ghana and to share her story and the mission of With This Ring at a banquet in California on Thursday, April 17.
