Etiopští sirotci získávají výuční listy a naději do budoucna
Nemají žádnou dovednost k životu mimo sirotčinec a k vedení vlastního života..“ Aby jim pomohli, organizují CHI pro starší sirotky kurzy řidičů taxíků, operátorů mobilních sítí, počítačových techniků a dalších odborností,“ řekl Barron. „Potřeba je trochu peněz pro tato školní učiliště a snad v některých případech i pro univerzity.“ Také jim poskytují rady, jak se připravit na skutečný život. „Každopádně dostanou naději pro tento pozemský život a dáváme jim i naději pro život nebeský. Ale začít se musí základními potřebami běžného života.“ Misie začíná s 31 dětmi a bude se rozšiřovat podle finančních možností. Zdroj: Mission Network News

ETHIOPIAN ORPHANS RECEIVING JOB TRAINING AND FUTURE HOPE

Source: Mission Network News
With about five million orphans in Ethiopia, 800,000 of which the United Nations say are the result of AIDS, Children’s Hope International (CHI) is trying to provide hope for after the children’s time in the orphanage. Corry Barron with CHI says, “The problem is, as the kids age in the orphanage, they never leave because they don’t have any skills. They don’t have the training necessary to leave the orphanage and go out on their own.” To help, CHI is training older orphans to be taxi drivers, mobile phone and computer technicians and more. “This involves getting a child into the skills training that they’ll need to go get a job, to make a living, to move out of the orphanage and be on their own,” says Barron. “What it takes is some money to get them into trade schools and even in some cases into universities.” They’re also providing them with counseling to prepare them for the real world. “They are going to have at least hope for this life, and we are giving them hope for eternal life. But, first you have to meet those basic needs.” The ministry is starting with 31 young people but will expand the program as funding allows.

RIGHTS GROUPS: 110 INDONESIAN CHURCHES CLOSED IN THREE YEARS

Source: Compass Direct News
Islamic extremist groups and local governments in Indonesia closed 110 churches from 2004 to 2007, according to religious and human rights organizations. The Wahid Institute, a moderate Muslim non-governmental organization, along with church associations and the Indonesian Human Rights Commission reported that discrimination and violence against churches was most common in the provinces of West Java, Banten, Central Java, South Sulawesi and Bengkulu. Radical Muslim groups coerced local governments to send letters to churches prohibiting any activities. When churches did not comply, they would be burned or otherwise damaged, as happened last December to Jakarta Baptist Christian Church (Gereja Kristen Baptis Jakarta, or GKBJ) in Sepatan, Tangerang province. Muslim extremists from the Islamic Defender Front kicked out the windows and doors of the pastor’s home and threw out his belongings. Local officials subsequently asked the pastor to leave the area until tensions cooled, and activities at the church came to halt. The church remains prohibited from opening.

* HCJB Global Voice has worked with local partners to establish more than 18 local Christian radio stations across Indonesia since 2004. Broadcasts from HCJB Global-Australia’s shortwave station in Kununurra also encourage listeners nationwide. In addition, HCJB Global Hands has helped with relief efforts since the Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake/tsunami and subsequent quakes that devastated parts of Indonesia.

HISTORIC FIRST ELECTIONS IN BUDDHIST NATION OF BHUTAN

The kingdom of Bhutan’s 2 million residents cast their votes in the nation’s first democratic elections Tuesday, March 25. The nation has been ruled by the Wangchuk hereditary dynasty since 1907. The Bhutan United Party claimed a landslide victory in the elections. The newly elected officials will form the National Council, which will set in motion the creation of a constitution and the platform for a Democratic government. Gospel for Asia (GFA) President K.P. Yohannan says it is still too early to tell if the yet-to-be created government will allow true freedom of religion. “Of course, we are praying that Bhutan’s first constitution will allow true freedom of religion,” Yohannan said. “These precious people deserve the opportunity to hear the Gospel and to know that there is a God in heaven who loves them and a Savior who died for them.” It is currently illegal to share the Gospel in Bhutan, and missionaries are limited to supplying humanitarian aid, as long as they do not talk about their faith. Less than one percent of Bhutan’s population professes to follow Christ. Believers can be expelled from the country and stripped of their citizenship if their new faith is discovered.

IRAQI CHRISTIAN IMMIGRANTS MARCHING IN WESTERN STREETS

Sources: AsisNews, WorldWide Religious News
Iraqi Christians have brought their silent marches to the West, calling for justice and an end to the persecution visited upon them daily in their homeland. While inside Iraq people are marching every day to demand the truth about the murder of Chaldean archbishop of Mosul Faraj Rahho, Iraqi immigrants in the Netherlands, Germany and Canada have taken to the streets, waving banners and holding up photos of their martyrs. For some demonstrators Rahho is “a symbol for every Iraqi Christian,” not only for the Chaldean community. In the meantime the “targeted killing” of Iraqi Christians continues, ostensibly to terrorize and drive them from the land. However, last month Muslim students from the city’s university handed out leaflets reproducing a poem written in honor of the slain bishop. The verses in question expressed sincere and humane sentiments about the martyred Rahho. In the leaflet the young writers also condemned the tragic situation that has seen 90 per cent of the city fall into the hands of Sunni extremism. And yet, on Easter Sunday, March 23, a young Chaldean man, Zahar Oshana, died in hospital from gunshot wounds he suffered as the left St. Elias Parish Church in Baghdad.

TED TURNER JOINS WITH CHURCHES TO FIGHT MALARIA WORLDWIDE

Sources: Associated Press, Assist News Service, Reuters
U.S. media mogul Ted Turner, who once called Christianity a “religion for losers,” has announced he is joining forces with two Christian organizations to combat malaria in Africa. Turner's United Nations Foundation, created in 1998 when the CNN founder pledged $1 billion to the United Nations, will together with the United Methodist Church and Lutheran World Relief, try to raise $200 million to fight the disease. “Together, we are announcing a new initiative to contribute to the internationally agreed goal of eliminating malaria death,” Turner said in remarks prepared for delivery at a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. “Stopping malaria will go a long way toward giving people in all countries new hope and confidence that we can succeed in the fight against poverty,” he said. “I regret anything I said about religion that was negative,” Turner, 69, said in a brief interview. “Religion is one of the bright spots as far as I'm concerned, even though there are some areas, like everything else, where they’ve gone over the top a little, in my opinion, “ Turner said. “But I’m sure God, wherever he is, wants to see us get along with one another and love one another.”
