„Pokud nikdo neudělá nic ve prospěch povolebního očekávání lidu Zimbabwe, určitě budeme brzo svědky genocidy podobné těm v Keni, Burundi a jiných horkých místech Afriky a světa,“ řekli tito církevní představitelé.    DOMINOES HELP TEENS LEARN CONSEQUENCES OF LIFE’S DECISIONS

Sources: International Bible Society, Mission Network News
Schoolchildren in Thailand play a game of dominoes that reinforces the lesson that life choices carry consequences. As one domino falls, it topples others -- a powerful visual reminder to young teens that sexual activity can affect all areas of their lives. “I like the game we played,” said one 10th-grader. “When we were playing, if we were not careful and one domino fell, it could mean our whole life failed.” Through IBS-STL’s Reach 4 Life program, young people worldwide are learning life skills that will help them abstain from sex until marriage and remain faithful thereafter. Reach 4 Life contains straightforward material on HIV, life, salvation and growing in faith. IBS-STL teams with ministries and local churches to present the material in schools, youth camps, and churches. Since 2004 nearly 1 million Reach 4 Life New Testaments have been distributed in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Thailand.

ZIMBABWE CHURCH ASKS FOR HELP AMID POLITICAL UNREST

Sources: World Wide Religious News, BBC
Church leaders in Zimbabwe have called for international action to prevent post-election violence developing into genocidal proportions. African countries and the U.N. should intervene to deal with a “deteriorating” situation, they said. The opposition says it won the presidential poll on Saturday, March 29, outright, but results have yet to be released. In a joint statement, leaders of the main religious denominations warned against leaving the post-election deadlock unresolved. “If nothing is done to help the people of Zimbabwe from their predicament, we shall soon be witnessing genocide similar to that experienced in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and other hotspots in Africa and elsewhere,” church leaders said..

DENOMINATION REPORTS FEWEST NUMBER OF BAPTISMS SINCE 1987

Source: Religion Today
The number of people baptized in churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) fell for the third straight year in 2007 to the denomination’s lowest level since 1987, reported the Baptist Press. Although the SBC added 473 new churches and gave more than $1.3 billion to support mission activities around the world, Thom Rainer, president of LifeWay Christian Resources, said there’s no escaping the fact that Southern Baptists are not reaching as many people for Christ as they once did. According to LifeWay’s Annual Church Profile, baptisms in 2007 dropped nearly 5.5 percent to 345,941, compared to 364,826 in 2006. “This report is truly disheartening,” Rainer said. “Total membership showed a slight decline. Baptisms have now declined for three consecutive years and for seven of the last eight years, and are at their lowest level since 1987. Indeed, the total baptisms are among the lowest reported since 1970. We are a denomination that, for the most part, has lost its evangelistic passion.”

ERITREAN OFFICIALS SENDING CLERGY TO MILITARY TRAINING CAMPS

Source: Assist News Service
A human rights group has learned that officials in the East African country of Eritrea are forcefully sending ministers of the Eritrean Orthodox Church to military training camps. International Christian Concern (ICC) reported in a news release. At the end of 2006 the Eritrean government informed churches of its decision to rescind a longstanding exemption of ministers from mandatory military service. Eritrean officials are now forcibly recruiting church ministers into military service on a wide scale. In rural areas, where most Orthodox churches are located, the maximum number of priests and deacons allowed to serve in any church is 10. The rest are expected to report for military service if they are under the age of 50. In the past, the Eritrean government has usually targeted unregistered churches, most of which are evangelical, and has closed down some six denominations since 2002. ICC reported that an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 pastors and their followers remain locked up in prisons, military barracks and metal shipping containers in Eritrea.
