Zdroj: Baptist World Alliance

MINISTRIES PLEDGE FINANCIAL HELP, PRAYER FOR CHINA'S EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Sources: Reuters, ASSIST News Service
With the death toll now past 15,000 from China's deadliest earthquake in decades, authorities have warned of potential further catastrophes that may lie ahead. Officials have warned that rivers may overflow and dams could burst from the strain. Monday's earthquake in southwest Sichuan province left more than 25,000 victims buried beneath debris and tens of thousands of soldiers, firefighters and civilians are racing to save them. Within hours of a 7.9 magnitude quake in western China, international Christian relief organization Samaritan's Purse responded to the crisis.

According to a news release, Franklin Graham of Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, is currently on a 10-day visit to China where he met with government and church leaders in Beijing, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai. Graham also delivered an historic message, preaching to 12,000 people in the largest church in the nation. According to senior pastor Rev. Joseph GU, this event was the largest gathering ever at Hangzhou Chong-Yi Christian Church. Bibles were also given out to those who responded and the church will provide an eight-week course for them on the basics of the Christian faith. When he learned about the devastating earthquake, Graham committed $150,000 to assist with the immediate disaster response. The relief organization is continuing to look for additional ways it can contribute to earthquake relief efforts.

Meanwhile, China Aid Association (CAA) is calling upon the churches of the world to pray for and provide aid for the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan province. CAA is actively collaborating with the Chinese house churches to send love gifts to help survivors. The mission agency says that in the past two days, in spite of the attention garnered by rescue efforts for victims, a house church Bible School in Hebei was raided and forced to close.

Earlier, Beijing police and officials from religion administration agencies in Beijing tried to abolish, by force, a united prayer meeting organized by members of a house church. BAPTIST SCHOOL AFFECTED BY FIGHTING IN LEBANON

Source: Baptist World Alliance
An outbreak of fighting in Lebanon has forced the temporary closure of the Beirut Baptist School (BBS), where more than 90 percent of the students are Muslims intent on getting a high quality education. The school was closed on Thursday, May 8, after fighting broke out between government forces and Hezbollah, the major Islamic movement in Lebanon. Lebanon has had a series of conflicts and violent clashes in recent times. In mid 2006, a month long war between Hezbollah and Israel resulted in heavy bombing in northern Israel and southern Lebanon, causing many deaths and displacement of more than 100,000. In mid 2007, the Fatah al-Islam group fought with the Lebanese army for several months. The latest fighting began on May 7. Some reports are that more than 80 persons have been killed and several hundred injured. There are fears that the fighting may escalate into a civil war.
