Zdroj: Christian Newswire

CHINA MEDIA WARN THAT DEATH TOLL COULD RISE SHARPLY

Sources Mission Network News, BBC
State-run media in China report that more than 50,000 people may have died in this week's earthquake that devastated parts of China. Tens of thousands of rescuers are working to save more than 25,000 people buried in southwest Sichuan province after Monday's 7.9 magnitude quake. Beijing says it will accept foreign aid and has agreed to help from rescue teams from Japan and its rival Taiwan. In Michigan, USA International Aid's Milton Amayun says they're working with three partners on the ground for second-wave response, exploring how to best serve to help rehabilitate Sichuan province's health system.

Food for the Hungry had a team working in Chengdu that "certainly felt the earthquake themselves and along with all their neighbors ran outside and were trying to find out the best thing to do" according to Sarah Sywulka. "Now that things have calmed down a little bit, they are getting the lay of the land," she said. The team is there doing an educational exchange program through the University of Chengdu. Thankfully, none of their students or staff were harmed.

About 10 million people across Sichuan province have been directly affected by the 7.9 quake, Chinese media said. The country is sending 30,000 extra troops to Sichuan to help the 50,000 already involved in rescue efforts. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has issued an emergency appeal for medical help, food, water and tents.

IN BANGKOK, TEAM TRAINS BURMESE IN DISASTER RESPONSE

Sources: Baptist Press, BBC, AFP
A team of Southern Baptists in Bangkok, Thailand is helping Burmese believers (from Myanmar) deal with the mounting crisis in their country after a May 3 cyclone. Five "initial responders" have joined Baptist Global Response (BGR) team members already on the ground in Bangkok. Jeff Palmer of BGR said Burmese believers are coming to Thailand for training in water purification and other technical work to respond to the disaster. "They also will be part of a meeting to discuss how to coordinate help and get aid more equally distributed," he said. State-run media in Burma have raised the official death toll to 43,318 with 27,838 missing, according to AFP news agency.

The regime is stopping most foreign aid workers already there from leaving Rangoon to go to affected areas. BBC's Natalia Antelava said the hard-hit Irrawaddy delta is still completely cut off from the outside world, with little evidence of things improving. Soldiers had blocked roads, but she found escort to the affected area with fishermen, one of whom said he wants the world to know what is happening.

SUDAN BISHOP SAYS KHARTOUM ATTACKS PINPOINT DARFUR'S PLIGHT

Source: Ecumenical News International
Roman Catholic Bishop Antonio Menegazzo of the El Obeid diocese including Darfur said the attack on the country's capital, Khartoum, by a rebel group signifies a deterioration of the situation in the region. "The situation in Darfur is worsening," Menegazzo said. In New York, the UN Security Council on May 13 issued a strong condemnation of the attack by rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement on May 10. The rebels were repelled by Sudanese troops and a curfew was imposed. The UN statement warned the government in Khartoum not to retaliate against civilians.

SURVEY: US CONGREGATIONS GAVE $8.8 BILLION TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Source: Christian Newswire
The first national random sample survey of U.S. religious giving from congregations of all denominations to the developing world shows they are giving record amounts in relief and development assistance to poor countries. In 2006, congregations gave $8.8 billion, according to the recently released 2008 Index of Global Philanthropy. The study found that over half of U.S. congregations gave an average of $10,500 to U.S. organizations for relief and development in poor countries. The survey specifically excluded support for evangelism, recording expenditures only for such items as food, clothing, and medicines, as well as cash for schools, clinics and small business development.
