Otázky kolem evangelizace při čínské olympiádě
Objevují se spory kolem evangelizace během letních olympijských her v Číně. Zdroj: MNN, Assist News Service

CHRISTIANS & MUSLIMS JITTERY ABOUT INDIA BOMBING INVESTIGATION

Sources: MNN, WASHINGTON POST, GOSPEL FOR ASIA
A little-known militant Muslim group has claimed responsibility for coordinated bombings in Jaipur, India last week. The attacks killed 80 people, wounding 200 others. In an e-mail message, the Indian Mujaheddin claimed responsibility for the blasts, also threatening further violence "if you continue to arrest innocent Muslims." Police have questioned dozens of Bangladeshis, with at least 30 taken into custody but none arrested. Investigators say however, that their suspicions rest on a Bangladeshi militant group, Harkat ul-Jihad-al-Islami. The attackers apparently used bicycles in the bombings and bike merchants say the men in their mid 20s who bought the bicycles spoke Bengali, the main language in neighboring Bangladesh. Tensions have been high between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the area, and the bombings happened near a popular Hindu temple in Jaipur.

Among those questioned was a Mission India project coordinator, Pastor Samuel, who also had purchased bicycles, according to Dave Stravers of Mission India´s Michigan headquarters. "Pastor Samuel had gone to purchase bicycles from a bicycle shop, and because he was purchasing 10 bicycles all at once, somebody got suspicious and called the police. The police arrested him, and he found himself under rather intense interrogation regarding what he was doing with the bicycles. The fact that he's a religious worker made them even more suspicious." Stravers says Pastor Samuel is now under scrutiny, which could complicate church planting and evangelism.

Meanwhile, residents of Jaipur's Bagrana neighborhood are deeply concerned fear that they've been targeted as suspects because of their Muslim faith. Predominantly Hindu, India also boasts a sizable Muslim minority. According to a Washington Post report, similar roundups of Muslims were staged after mid 2006 train bombings in Mumbai that left about 200 people dead.

EVANGELISM CONTROVERSY BREWING AT CHINA OLYMPICS

SOURCE: MNN, ASSIST News Service
Controversy is brewing about evangelism at the summer Olympics in China. Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, told reporters that he's against overt evangelism in China because it's against Chinese law. Open Doors USA President Carl Moeller says, "Franklin Graham's comments I think were designed for a political audience to give him probably more access. And I'm not to criticize a brother, but I would say the gospel has always been preached in places where governments did not want it preached." Interviewed by OneNewsNew, China Aid Association President Bob Fu deemed the comments of Graham as "offensive and inappropriate," saying the underground church in China welcomes evangelistic efforts. The 4 Winds Christian Athletics sports ministry based in Wisconsin, USA, also maintains that Christians should witness during the Olympics. Moeller says God's Word directs Christians to be ready to share the gospel in any season, even under unknown government or religious persecution. Calling the event "a tremendous opportunity," he said Open Doors is encouraging those who plan to attend the Olympic Games to request an Open Doors packet of materials designed for evangelism.

VIETNAM OFFICIALS CONFISCATE HOME OF EVANGELIST

SOURCE: COMPASS DIRECT
Officials in Vietnam's Lao Cai province have confiscated the land and home of a former opium addict because of his phenomenal success as an evangelist, local Christian sources said. Sua Yinh Siong of Lau Chai village, in Sapa district in the northwest mountainous region, had long been a desperate opium addict, leading to destitution for him and his family. His conversion to Christ came in 2004, after hearing a Firm Foundation broadcast over FEBC radio in his own Hmong language. He was able to quit his debilitating opium addiction in astonishingly short order with God's help, he said. When Siong broke completely from his animistic past, his joy over his liberation soon spread to others. Eventually more than 200 families in Sapa district also decided to follow Christ. Government officials warned Siong to stop evangelizing, eventually threatening to seize his property--a threat that was eventually carried out.

CHRISTIANS URGED TO RESPOND TO HUNGER CRISIS THROUGH RECIPE OF HOPE CAMPAIGN

Source: Christian Newswire
Bread for the World is asking people of faith to respond to the global hunger crisis by adding their voices to the Recipe for Hope campaign that began on Mother''s Day and runs through the week of Father's Day, June 15. Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World said, "Together we can turn the recipe for despair into a recipe of hope for thousands of mothers and fathers struggling to feed their families." Global food prices have nearly doubled in three years, and the World Bank estimates as many as 100 million people will join the 854 million who already do not have enough to eat each day. Hardest hit are the children; 16,000 of whom die daily due to hunger-related causes or one child every five seconds.
