The young daughter of award-winning Christian music artist Steven Curtis Chapman was struck and killed Wednesday, May 14, in the driveway of her family’s home near Nashville, Tenn. The 5-year-old girl, Maria Sue, was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother, according to Laura McPherson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. INDONESIA MUSLIMS BURN CHRISTIAN VILLAGE: 4 KILLED, 56 INJURED

Sources: Barnabas Fund Australia, BosNewsLife
Nearly all Christian families in a village on Indonesia’s Seram Island remain homeless after a Muslim mob burned their houses and other properties as well as killing four believers and injuring dozens others, investigators told BosNewsLife. The mainly Christian community of Horale in the religiously volatile Maluku province was attacked on Friday, May 2, by a mob from the neighboring village of Saleman, which is predominantly Muslim, according to Barnabas Fund, which investigates the plight of Christians in Islamic nations. Patrick Sookhdeo, Barnabas Fund’s international director, said Horale is in a remote area of the island and therefore a relative easy target for extremists. Reports said, however, that Indonesian authorities have sent special police forces to guard the border between the two villages.

CHURCH OPPOSES EXECUTING ALLEGED KILLER OF IRAQI BISHOP

Source: Compass Direct News
Iraqi church leaders have spoken out against the death sentence ordered for the alleged murderer of a Chaldean bishop kidnapped in northern Iraq in March. Iraq’s Central Criminal Court charged al-Qaida Iraq member Ahmed Ali Ahmed with killing Mosul’s Chaldean archbishop, a government spokesperson said. Archbishop Paulus Faraj Rahho’s corpse was found in a shallow grave in Mosul on March 13 after gunmen snatched him from his car two weeks prior near the city’s Holy Spirit parish. Speaking from Baghdad, Auxiliary Bishop Shlemon Warduni said that Ahmed should be punished for his crime but that executing him would be pointless. “If somebody is killed I think there is no use in it for the Iraqi people,” the Chaldean church leader said. “Our principles are love and pardon and reconciliation.”

REPORT: ‘JESUS’ FILM FREES COMMUNITIES FROM WITCHCRAFT

Source: Mission Network News
The power of the gospel is freeing people in the Central African Republic from the bondage of witchcraft which often has the power to kill or cause great suffering. A “JESUS” film team responded to an epidemic of witchcraft by “soaking” villages in the region of Bossangoa with the gospel. Team members walked from village to village and showed the film every night. Many witches came to Christ through this ministry, and 18 churches were planted. The region’s governor called team members to thank them personally, saying, “I congratulate you because of the miracles that your film is doing among those witches,” he said. “Now your team and you have the responsibility to preach through your miracle ‘JESUS’ film to all the towns and villages under my supervision.”

20,000+ DISPLACED FOLLOWING CONFLICT IN OIL-RICH AREA OF SUDAN

Source: Christian Solidarity Worldwide
More than 20,000 people are reported to have been displaced after fighting erupted in the disputed oil-rich Abyei area of Sudan, throwing the future of the 2005 peace accord between northern and southern Sudan into doubt. Fighting broke out after members of the Abyei police force killed one person in response to the earlier killing of three southern civilians by members of the northern-backed militia. The fighting began in earnest on Tuesday, May 13, when northern reinforcements attacked the town of Abyei with heavy artillery. It intensified throughout the weekend, with northern forces reportedly launching deliberate attacks on Abyei’s civilians. “This crisis could perhaps have been avoided had the international community confronted the northern government early on regarding its refusal to accept the international boundary ruling,” said Christian Solidarity Worldwide National Director Stuart Windsor.
