Zdroj: Ecumenical News International.

Christian groups in China are continuing to provide assistance to vulnerable communities devastated by the earthquake that struck China’s Sichuan province Monday, May 12, amid fears of impending disease outbreaks and the looming rainy season.

The news agency Xinhua reported that as of Monday, May 26, the death toll from the quake had risen to 65,080 nationwide while 360,058 people were injured with 23,150 people still missing.

UPDATE: PAKISTAN LAW MINISTER OPEN TO MORE MINORITIES’ SEATS

Source: Assist News Service
In an apparent response to the bill tabled by the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) pushing for an increase in minorities’ seats in the national and provincial assemblies and the allocation of reserved seats for minorities in Senate, Pakistan federal minister for Law and Justice, Farooq H. Naik, said the government wants to increase minorities’ seats. The announcement was made in the Pakistan Peoples Party Central executive committee meeting on Saturday, May 24. Hailing the announcement, APMA Chief Shahbaz Bhatti, a member of the National Assembly, termed it as an answer to the inflexible campaign of the APMA. The campaign involved talks, seminars, conferences and correspondence at all levels with a view to raise the issue of minorities’ lesser representation in the provincial and national assemblies and absence of representation in Senate, the upper house of parliament. Minorities have had no representation in the Senate since the creation of Pakistan in 1947.

Christian Freedom International (CFI) has expresses deep condolences over the death of Saw Ba Thin Sein, chairman of the Karen National Union (KNU) in Myanmar (Burma). The KNU is an ethnic rebel group that has been fighting for the autonomy of the Karen people in Myanmar since 1948. The group lost its leader on Thursday, May 22, in southern Karen state. He joined the KNU in 1949 and became chairman in 2000 despite suffering from diabetes, asthma and heart disease. He was 82 years old. Throughout his service he stressed the need for unity among the predominantly Christian Karen people, particularly after the division that led to the formation of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, a KNU-breakaway group that ultimately aligned itself with the ruling military junta. The chairman is survived by his wife and four children.

POLL: MOST U.S. RESIDENTS OWN BIBLE, BUT FEW USE IT FOR DIRECTION

Bible study or the lack thereof has been the focus of many Gallup polls. George Gallup, Jr. has devoted more than 50 years to conducting polls that assess what Americans believe and know about the Bible. In 2003 nearly half of survey respondents (49 percent) reported they believe the Bible has decisive authority over what they say and do, yet only 28 percent said they regularly study the Bible to find direction in life. A 2002 Gallup poll found that 93 percent of U.S. residents own a Bible.
