MINISTRY ADOPTS HOLISTIC STRATEGY TO HELP CYCLONE SURVIVORS

Source: Global Aid Network
With Cyclone Nargis representing complete destruction of people’s emotional, physical and social lives in Myanmar (Burma), the Global Aid Network (GAiN) has begun a strategy that takes on a holistic perspective to helping people pick up the pieces and move ahead. Community institutions such as jails, orphanages and hospitals have been targeted for emergency relief.

More than 7,000 people were fed by GAiN, and a mission representative met with local monks to secure a joint agreement to rebuild two monasteries in the affected areas. One of the large monasteries could provide shelter for hundreds of people during the upcoming monsoon season, double up as a school, and help people find some sense of emotional stability in the short term.

Local authorities were so impressed with the partnership with the Buddhist monks that a senior GAiN official was able to obtain an audience with one of the four generals who is in charge of relief project in one of the four affected areas.

Immediate relief and assistance was offered to the local government-controlled relief camp at Maubin as well as a feeding program, women’s and children’s kits and food kits. Talks have opened the door for further involvement of GAiN with government authorities in the relief and rebuilding of communities.

A Christian center was selected as the training ground for 40 local people in the building of large tank water filtration system. Using simple products such as carefully selected pebbles, gravel and washed river sand, people can build a natural chemical-free water filtration systems. This system will clean milky, muddy, bug-infested and contaminated water.

UPDATE: SUSPICIOUS ENDING TO TRIAL OF UYGHUR CHRISTIAN IN CHINA

Sources: China Aid Association, Assist News Service
In China the trial of a Uyghur Christian on Tuesday, May 27, resulted in the case of Alimujiang Yimiti being sent back to the original Public Security Bureau (PSB) prosecutors due to “insufficient evidence” against the accused. Alimujiang was represented in court by two lawyers but his wife, Nuergul, was prohibited from entering the courtroom as were members of the media due to the government’s claims of the sensitivity of the case. On Monday, May 26, in Beijing a U.S. delegation led by assistant Secretary of State David Kramer reinstated human rights dialogue with the Chinese government. Alimujiang’s case will be one that will be raised to government officials. Interviewed by Bob Fu, president of China Aid Association (CAA), Nuergul restated her husband’s innocence due to the fact that he is an agricultural worker and has no access to state secrets, nor was he engaging in separatist activities. She pleaded for the early release of her husband. CAA has also learned from two independent sources that the Ministry of Public Security has received funding from the Chinese central government to increase their campaign of eradicating house churches across China.
