Zdroj: Assist News Service

6 MORE WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEMS SENT TO CHINA IN AID EFFORT

Source: Assist News Service
Water Missions International (WMI) sent another six water purification systems to earthquake-ravaged China late Wednesday, May 28. The systems were airlifted by FedEx at no cost to WMI and were expected to reach Shanghai on the weekend.

Upon arrival in Shanghai the systems will be transported to Chengdu and installed in the areas of greatest need. According to a media release, Andre Mergenthaler, WMI’s international project director, has been on the ground in China leading a water resource team of engineers and technicians to install water systems in since a devastating earthquake hit the country’s Sichuan province on May 12.

The latest delivery brings to 12 the number or water systems that WMI, in cooperation with Samaritan’s Purse, has deployed in China. Six systems are already operating in Luoshi, Yinghua, Lungji and Mianzhu -- towns with a total population of 29,000.

Each water system, assembled by volunteer labor, provides a continuous supply of about 10,000 gallons per day, and can be rapidly deployed and installed in only a few hours to purify available surface and shallow well-water sources in affected areas.

CHINESE OFFICIALS RAID 1,000-MEMBER HOUSE CHURCH IN BEIJING

Sources: Christian Aid Association, Christian Newswire
On Sunday, May 25, government officials in China raided the Beijing Gospel Church which has more than 1,000 members who meet at separate house churches throughout the city. At least six of these locations were disrupted by authorities who then detained Pastor Gao Zhen. Gao was interrogated and released at 6 p.m. the same day. Officials from four different agencies, including the Public Security Bureau (PSB) and the Bureau of Ethnic and Religious Affairs, forcefully entered and searched the homes of house church members, confiscating religious materials without presenting proper documentation or search warrants. Some members received minor injuries from police officials who resorted to violence against the members. Despite the illegal actions taken by the government officials, house church members complied with their demands, even shaking the hands and pronouncing a blessing upon the officials who had broken into their homes.

34 ERITREAN CHRISTIANS JAILED, DETAINEES IN EGYPT TO BE DEPORTED

Sources: Compass Direct News, Christian Solidarity Worldwide
Security police in the East African nation of Eritrea cracked down on more Christians again last week, arresting 34 evangelicals gathered for prayer and fellowship in a local home in Keren. The police raid on Wednesday, May 28, targeted members of the Berhane Hiwet Church in Keren, Eritrea’s third largest city, 124 miles northwest of the capital Asmara. All 24 men and 10 women present were imprisoned while their children were left behind.

This was the second round of arrests last week in Eritrea where the oppressive regime has outlawed all independent Protestant churches since 2002, closing their buildings and banning gatherings in private homes. Worshipers caught disobeying the blanket restrictions could be arrested and tortured for weeks, months or even years. They are also denied allowed legal counsel and not brought to trial.

Meanwhile, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has received information indicating that Egyptian authorities will begin forced deportations of some 150 Eritrean prisoners being held at the Kanater prison in Cairo within a few days.

The Eritrean detainees, who originally fled from political and religious persecution in Eritrea, are among more than 1,000 Eritreans held in Egyptian prisons. They have been denied access to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Their deportations are due to take place despite the fact that the UNHCR has a non-return advisory for Eritrean refugees.

MINISTRY LAUNCHES PROJECT FOR AUDIO OLD TESTAMENT IN AFRICA

Source: Mission Network News
There are 24 million Hausa speakers in Nigeria and Niger, along with another 15 million who speak Hausa as a second language. In these areas, many non-readers are coming to Christ through the audio gospel messages. However, that is creating a need for more grounding in the Old Testament. Chad VandenBosch of Audio Scripture Ministries said the ministry is addressing this with the help of a group called Theovision. “Church growth is being stifled by illiteracy and the lack of access to the Scriptures and the truths found in those Scriptures,” he explained. “So they asked us, specifically, if we could go in and record the Old Testament, to have that available as well as the New Testament.” The audio Old Testament will support missionaries working with these people. “It gives a biblical background that you don’t get through the New Testament,” VandenBosch said. “It gives a lot of basis for what they’re able to hear through the New Testament recordings or are able to read in the New Testament. It just gives them a broader picture of the Scriptures.”

1 KILLED, 4 INJURED AFTER EGYPTIAN CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS CLASH

Source: Assist News Service
One Egyptian Muslim was killed and four Christians were wounded Saturday, May 31, in a clash regarding disputed land near a Christian monastery in central Egypt, security sources said. A Muslim man, Khalil Mohammed, 39, was killed by gunfire, reported Reuters which quoted local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity. At least two of the wounded Christians were monks at the monastery. Reuters reported that the groups exchanged gunfire after Christians in the town of Mallawy, about 190 miles south of Cairo, began constructing a wall around disputed land near the Abu Fana monastery. Muslims who believed the agricultural land belonged to them reportedly objected, resulting in the gunfire exchange. Christians account for up to 10 percent of Egypt’s population, and relations between Christians and the Muslim majority are usually peaceful. However, disputes, usually regarding land, religious buildings or young women, sometimes result in violence.
