Zdroj: Mission Network News, Gospel for Asia

CHRISTIANS RESPOND TO FLOODING AS MONSOON RAINS HIT SRI LANKA

Sources: Mission Network News, Gospel for Asia
Thousands of people have been displaced as monsoon rains have hit the island nation of Sri Lanka. Gospel for Asia (GFA) President K.P. Yohannan said the official number of people who died is about 20, but reports from the ministry people in the country are indicating much higher numbers. “Our people began helping with food and clothing,” he explained. “Some 83,000 families in seven districts were displaced.” Hundreds of homes have been damaged, adding to the crisis in this country where there is ongoing civil unrest. Christians have faced increasing persecution in recent months, but the disaster has opened doors to share the gospel. “In the midst of suffering and huge problems, people seem to listen,” Yohannan said. “They ask us to pray for them, [and we] tell them about Jesus and hope. Obviously that’s happening. They’re humbled and seek help.” GFA has a Bible college and about 100 congregations in Sri Lanka. “There are full-time workers who are helping and bringing relief among the people,” he added. GFA workers have also been affected by the flooding as believers’ houses and churches have been damaged, and many need to be rebuilt.

ISLAMIC MILITANTS CONTINUE TO PRESSURE CHRISTIANS IN INDONESIA

Christians in Indonesia continue to face pressure from radical Islamic groups in the country. On Wednesday, June 4, members of the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) in Tangerang in Indonesia’s Banten province confronted and threatened to kill church leader Bedali Hulu as he visited his elderly mother-in-law in a rented home formerly used as a meeting place for his congregation.

For the past 18 months Hulu’s Jakarta Baptist Christian Church in Pisangan has wrestled for the right to hold church services in the village. Church members will soon take the matter to court in hopes of finding a permanent solution to the dispute.

The confrontation was the latest in a series of threats. Last week as the congregation held a simple meeting in a church member’s home -- sharing a meal and singing a few hymns -- FPI members arrived and repeated threats first issued in November to raid the homes of church members if meetings continued.

Last weekend at least 30 people were injured when Islamic militants attacked participants at a rally last weekend promoting religious tolerance in Jakarta, rights investigators said. Militants from the Islamic Defenders Forum (FPI) and Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) attacked participants of a rally promoting religious tolerance at the Indonesian National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Sunday, June 1.

The rally, organized by the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Faith (AKKBB) to celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the tolerance-based state ideology Pancasila, was attacked at 1:30 p.m. by around 200 militants dressed in ninja masks and wielding sharpened wooden bamboo and steel sticks.

The attack lasted about half an hour and ended when the militants left to join a Hizb ut-Tahrir demonstration in front of the presidential palace. The participants, mainly families with children, fled for their lives. Police officers present at the scene also came under attack and most fled. Some 30 people were injured, several requiring hospitalization.

KYRGYZSTAN CHRISTIAN DENIED BURIAL IN APPROVED CEMETERY

After the death of a 14-year-old Baptist boy in Kulanak in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan on Monday, May 19, the local imam and a village mob prevented his burial in the village, even in land allocated two years earlier for Christian burials, said local Baptists. A mob, some of them drunk, threatened the Isakov family, but the police did nothing to protect them. Instead, the police forced their way into the house, stole the body and buried it 25 miles away “in a disrespectful manner.” Talay Jakypov of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Naryn Region said the decision not to allow the burial in the village came in writing from district authorities. However, a spokeswoman for the regional administration denied this, saying the “whole village” was against the burial. “We need a stronger law putting a constraint on all kinds of religious sects. Only then would we not have such problems,” she added. The boy died of heart failure.

BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE TO BUILD BAPTISM CENTER IN JORDAN

The government of Jordan has offered a plot of land to the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). Located near the Bethany region, the land is approximately where it is believed John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein first offered the land to BWA in September, and an agreement was reached between BWA President David Coffey and Jordan’s Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammed on Monday, May 26. At the site there will be a large plaque with the inscription: “The commission of the site of the baptism of Jesus Christ welcomes here in particular foreign visiting pilgrims from the member churches of the Baptist World Alliance.” In addition, a baptism center will be built on the bank of the Jordan River. Nabil Costa, Middle East representative for the European Baptist Federation, one of six continental unions of the BWA, said, “This is an act of appreciation for Christian presence in the region.” The center and site will be dedicated and opened next spring.

IRAQI PASTOR ACCUSED OF KIDNAPPING CHILD, RELEASED ON BAIL

Source: Compass Direct News
An Iraqi pastor jailed on kidnapping charges has been released on bail after being held for 30 days in a Kurdish prison. Writing from Dohuk, 250 miles north of Baghdad, Pastor Abdul Kareem Yacob, 49, said Kurdish secret police arrested, released and then rearrested him before finally granting him bail on April 28. Yacob believes the real reason for his arrest was religious as authorities failed to produce any evidence that he had kidnapped a child. While in custody, he said the general director of secret police called him into his office and told him, “Priests and other religious men are complaining because you preach the gospel to Muslims, Assyrians and Yezidis [a religious minority based in northern Iraq].” The director then became angry with Yacob and threatened him before ordering him to return to his cell. Yacob admitted that he had helped distribute thousands of Christian tracts just days before secret police detained him at his home on March 30 without explanation. Yacob was accused of kidnapping a young child who is missing, but the parents and uncle of the child later testified that the pastor was innocent.
