| WorldServe Ministries oznamuje, že v Chengdu se za Kristem v důsledku kazatelské práce podzemní církve vydalo 5000 lidí. Novinové titulky jsou nyní zaměřeny na olympiádu v Pekingu. Ale ti, kdo přežili zemětřesení 12. května, jsou stále v hluboké nouzi. Smrt si vyžádala 69 000 lidí a 20 000 se pohřešuje, další 4 miliony ztratily domov. Viceprezident WorldServe Ken Leggatt řekl, že mnoho Číňanů se zapojilo do záchranných operací. „Máme asi 400 seminaristů a 800 dobrovolníků z celé Číny, kteří vyslyšeli výzvu k utvoření týmů pro práci na místě neštěstí,“ řekl Leggatt. | Misionáři Joe a Brenda Ziska z Greater Europe Mission (GEM) si myslí, že Rakušané jsou nyní otevřenější k naslouchání evangeliu. Jen 25 000 z 8 milionů Rakušané jsou evangelijní křesťané. „Situace se mění v tom smyslu, že zatímco dříve lidé byli zcela apatičtí nebo se k duchovním věcem obraceli zády, nyní jsou otevřenější, zejména někteří mladí lidé,“ řekl Joe. Před několika stoletími bylo habsburské Rakousko středem katolické protireformace. 200 let byli lidé, kteří se nechtěli stát římskými katolíky, obraceni násilně nebo museli odejít do exilu. Navíc je zde evangelijní církev stále považována za sektu. Rakušané mají sklony k plachosti a zdrženlivosti. „Rakušan je velmi uzavřený a trvá dlouho, než se s ním seznámíte,“ dodala Brenda. | Tři měsíce po cyklónu Nargis, který řádil 2. května, jsou podle zpráv podmínky na místě katastrofy stále zoufalé. Rescue 24, záchranná a pomocná akce Baptist World Aid - nástroje pro rozvoj a pomoc Světové Baptistické Aliance (BWA) - oznamuje, že „oběti neštěstí trpí zoufalým nedostatkem základních životních potřeb.“ Záchranáři BWA oznamují, že „mnoho rodin žije pod nouzovými přístřešky … postavenými z větví stromů, šatstva a někdy i všelijakého odpadu.“ Také nejsou žádné vodárny. Situace se zhoršuje s příchodem období dešťů, které zde trvá do listopadu a přináší četné a velmi vydatné srážky. BWA vyjmenovává nejpotřebnější položky – potraviny, pitnou vodu, hygienické potřeby, psychologickou podporu, střechu nad hlavou. BWA úzce spolupracuje s Barmskou baptistickou jednotou, která sestavila Výbor pro pomoc a rozvoj po cyklónu. Ten poskytuje potraviny, vodu, oblečení, moskytiéry a běžné léky 100 000 postižených, kteří tuto pomoc zoufale potřebují. | Tisíce amerických občanů se v sobotu 16. srpna sejdou v Národním Parku ve Washingtonu aby povzbuzovali tři generace lidí k odložení denominačních rozdílů a k modlitbám za Spojené Státy. Pod názvem Volání se přes 700 000 Američanů v posledních osmi letech scházelo k podobným akcím ve 12 amerických městech a přes milion i s ostatním světem. „Národní park má pro náš národ historický význam. Je to výborné místo k prosbám Bohu, aby rozprostřel své požehnání nad naší zemí,“ řekla Lou Engle, vizionářka, která se Voláním zabývá. I pro minulá obdobná sejití byla vybrána určitá témata jako rasismus, sexuální nevázanost nebo potraty. Křesťanka zemřela na malárii v eritrejském vězení |

| Vězněna a mučena od prosince pro své křesťanské vyznání zemřela minulý týden 37letá Azib Simon na malárii na vojenské základně Wi ve východoafrické zemi Eritrea. Zesláblá přestálým mučením zemřela pouhý týden po nákaze. Křesťanům je ve vězení málokdy věnována lékařská péče a podle proniklých zpráv i v případě Simon vězeňští úředníci odmítli poskytnout jí léčbu. Byla členkou sboru Kale Hiwet v Assabě, jednoho z nezávislých evangelijních sborů, na který se autoritářský režim zaměřil. Byla od začátku zadržována v neblaze proslulém výcvikovém středisku 30 km jižně od námořního přístavu Massawa. Simoninou smrtí se počet potvrzených úmrtí křesťanů, kteří v eritrejských vězeních odmítali zříci se víry a byli mučeni, zvýšil na pět. | Pákistánští manželé se odvolali proti soudnímu rozhodnutí svěřit opatrovnictví nad jejich dcerami ve věku 10 a 13 let jejich údajným únoscům. Soud vycházel z konverze obou dívek k islámu. Soudce Main Naem Sardar rozhodl v sobotu 12. července, že 13letá Saba Masih a její 10letá sestra Aneela se staly muslimkami, což bere jejich křesťanským rodičům právo dál o ně pečovat. „Prohlásil, že pokud rodiče jsou křesťané, a jestliže dívky před soudem řekly, že přijaly islám, jejich příbuzenský vztah se tím ruší,“ řekl obhájce Rašid Rehman z Komise pro lidská práva v Pakistánu. Podle běžného výkladu islámského práva křesťan nemůže pečovat o muslima. Obě sestry se objevily u okresního soudu Muzzaffargarh v doprovodu 16 muslimských mužů a bylo jim dáno 5 minut, aby potvrdily, že jejich konverze je pravá, řekl ochránce lidských práv Ashfaq Fateh. | Z jednoho z nejuznávanějších vedoucích domácích sborů a jeho manželky se stali bezdomovci. Úředníci je vyhnali z jejich domu v Pekingu, protože se setkali s delegací amerického kongresu.
Pastor Bike Žang, ředitel Federace domácích církví a jeho manželka Xie Fenglan byli údajně v sobotu 6. července úředníky veřejné bezpečnosti (PSB) donuceni odejít z jejich domu v pekingské čtvrti Chao Jang. PSB je jednou ze složek čínského represivního aparátu. Podle China Aid Association (CAA) se oba manželé napřed chtěli uchýlit do domu svého přítele, ale úředníci je sledovali a donutili je nastěhovat se do blízkého hotelu. V pondělí 14. července jim bylo nařízeno opustit i hotel. Bike i jeho manželka tak byli donuceni žít na ulici, bez možnosti nalézt útočiště. Když se úředníků ptali, proč jsou oba manželé takto nuceni opustit Peking, odpověděli jim: „Je to tím, že Bike Žang se setkal s Američany a tím narušil harmonický průběh pekingské olympiády.“ V souvislosti s tímto "nevhodným" setkáním 18 členů kongresu USA podepsalo petici za propuštění osob vězněných čínskou vládou z náboženských důvodů. Zmučený iránský křesťan uprchl i s rodinou do Turecka |

| Několik dnů po svém propuštění z vazby, po týdny trvajících výsleších a mučení tajnou policií, iránský křesťan Mohsen Namvar prchl i s rodinou přes hranici do Turecka. Po cestě vlakem vážně zbitý křesťan ve středu 2. července dospěl i s manželkou a synem do východního Turecka. 44letý Namvar byl držen v samovazbě frakcí Sepah Iránských revolučních gard od 31. května do 26. června, kdy úřady jeho rodině oznámily, že jej „dočasně“ propouštějí. Tajná policie žádala při propuštění kauci odpovídající 700 000 Kč, soudní úředníci přitom odmítli vystavit potvrzení přijmu této částky v hotovosti z rodinných úspor. Při propuštění měl Namvar horečku, velmi jej bolela záda, měl vysoký krevní tlak, nezvládnutelný třes končetin a opakující se výpadky paměti. „Nepochybuji, že mně chtěli zabít,“ řekl Namvar. Namvar, konvertoval od islámu ke křesťanství již jako mladík. Řekl, že zlé fyzické nakládání bylo důsledkem jeho odmítání dát policii jména nebo informace o jiných konvertitech nebo o doma se scházejících skupinách křesťanů v Iránu. | THOUSANDS COME TO CHRIST IN WAKE OF CHINA’S EARTHQUAKE
Source: Mission Network News WorldServe Ministries reports that 5,000 people have come to Christ as a result of the ministries work through the underground church in Chengdu, China. While the headlines are turning to the Olympic Games in Beijing, survivors from the May 12 earthquake are still in great need. The death toll has reached 69,000, and 20,000 people remain missing while 4 million others are homeless. Ken Leggatt, vice president for operations at WorldServe, says many Chinese believers have been involved in relief efforts. “We have about 400 seminary students and 800 volunteers from all over China who have responded to put teams together to minister in these areas,” he said. WorldServe has also established a temporary school for the children. The disaster has opened numerous ministry opportunities. “This is turning into a two- to five-year strategy for the house church movement in China,” added Leggatt. Reports indicate that in three months the Chinese government will be ending all relief assistance in the region, leaving most victims without resources for the winter. In response, Leggatt is urging believers to pray and provide financial help, food, clothing and other supplies. WORLDWIDE DAY OF FASTING, PRAYER TO FOCUS ON NORTH KOREA Source: Global Justice Prayer Network A Worldwide Day of Fasting and Prayer for North Korea is planned for Sunday, July 27, the 55th anniversary of the Korean War armistice. It’s a call for Christians worldwide to intercede for the nation, regarded as the world’s worst persecutor of Christians and the worst human rights violator. An estimated 200,000 to 1 million North Koreans are being held in political concentration camps, including many believers who have been imprisoned because they or their relatives are accused of being critical of the North Korean regime. The nation has also been devastated by famine, causing millions to starve to death in the last 10 years. International food aid has been diverted to the ruling party and the military. Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans have fled to China to escape persecution and starvation. But if caught by Chinese authorities, they are forcibly repatriated back to North Korea where they face imprisonment or even execution. AUSTRIANS BECOMING MORE OPEN TO GOSPEL, SAY MISSIONARIES Source: Mission Network News Austrians are becoming more open to hearing the gospel, say missionaries Joe and Brenda Ziska of Greater Europe Mission (GEM). Only about 25,000 of Austrian’s 8 million people, or 0.3 percent, are evangelical Christians. “It’s become more responsive because we’ve seen people going from being totally apathetic or against spiritual questions to being more open—especially some of the younger people,” said Joe. Hundreds of years ago, Hapsburg, Austria, was the center of the Counter-Reformation. For about 200 years Christians who did not follow the Roman Catholic Church were forcibly reconverted or exiled from the Austrian empire. In addition, evangelical Christianity is still perceived as a cult, and Austrians tend to be shy and reserved. “The Austrian is a very private person, so it takes a long time to get to know them,” Brenda added. “For people to accept Christ, you need to be talking to them personally about the personal things going on in their lives.” MYANMAR RECOVERING SLOWLY AFTER CYCLONE NARGIS Source: Baptist World Alliance Nearly three months after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar (Burma) on May 2, reports are that conditions remain desperate. Rescue 24, a search, rescue and relief effort by Baptist World Aid, the relief and development arm of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), has reported that there are “huge unmet basic needs for the victims of the disaster.” BWA rescue workers said that “many families are living under makeshift shelter . . . made of clothes, branches of trees or even under debris.” There are also no proper water storage facilities. Conditions have been made worse by the continuing rainy season which lasts until November, bringing frequent, torrential rainfall. BWA lists the most urgent needs as food, drinking water, hygiene products, psychosocial support, shelter and livelihood support. BWA is working closely with the Myanmar Baptist Convention which formed the Nargis Relief and Rehabilitation Central Committee to provide food, drinking water, clothing, mosquito nets and medicine daily to nearly 100,000 survivors who desperately need the supplies. BWA workers also plan to begin vocational training in some of the hardest hit areas. THOUSANDS TO PRAY, PROTEST ABORTION AT GATHERING IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Source: Assist News Network Thousands of U.S. residents will gather at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Saturday, Aug. 16, encouraging three generations of people to lay down their differences, engage in corporate worship, and pray for the country. Known as TheCall, more than 700,000 Americans have gathered at similar events in 12 U.S. cities in the last eight years, and more than 1 million have assembled internationally. “The National Mall is a place of historical significance to our nation and the perfect location to call upon God to shed his blessings upon our land,” said Lou Engle, the visionary behind TheCall. Specific regional issues have been addressed in previous events such as racism, sexual immorality and abortion. Participants at the Aug. 16 event will focus on praying for an end to abortion, the restoration and protection of marriage, and the upcoming presidential election. CHRISTIAN WOMAN IN ERITREAN PRISON DIES OF MALARIA Source: Compass Direct News Imprisoned and tortured for her Christian faith since December, 37-year-old Azib Simon died of malaria in the Wi’a Military Training Center in the East African nation of Eritrea last week. Weakened by ongoing torture, Simon contracted malaria only a week before she died. Christians in the prison are rarely given medical attention, and the sources said authorities refused to provide treatment for Simon’s malaria. She had attended the Kale-Hiwet Church in Assab, one of the independent evangelical churches that have been targeted by the country’s authoritarian regime. She was held at the notorious training center, 20 miles south of the Red Sea port of Massawa, since her arrest. Simon’s death makes a total of five Christians confirmed to have died in Eritrean prisons after being tortured for refusing to recant their faith. In a related development, eight Christian men held at the Adi-Quala prison were taken to the medical emergency faci lities on Sunday, June 8, as a result of torture by military personnel. BELARUSIAN CHRISTIAN FINED FOR ATTEMPTING TO HOLD BIBLE STUDY Source: Christian Solidarity Worldwide A Belarusian Christian has been fined the equivalent of nine months’ minimum wage for attempting to organize an informal Bible study and discussion group. On Monday, June 9, the Grodno Regional Court declared Valentin Borovik guilty of violating the Belarusian Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religion and the Administrative Violations Code, and he was handed a fine of 315,000 rubles (US$150). Boravik was originally accused of violating Article 14 of the Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religion which stipulates that in order to establish a new religious organization there must be a minimum of 20 members over the age of 18. He was then fined under Article 9.9 for holding a religious meeting with fewer than 20 members. The conviction came despite Boravik’s statement that he had no intention of establishing a new religious group but “was merely organizing a meeting with other Christians to read the Bible and discuss religious questions,&rdqu o; a right protected under the constitution of Belarus. PAKISTANI COURT GRANTS CUSTODY OF GIRLS TO KIDNAPPERS Source: Compass Direct News A Pakistani couple has appealed a court decision to award custody of their two daughters, 10 and 13, to the children’s alleged kidnappers. The court based its custody decision on the girls’ conversion to Islam. Judge Main Naeem Sardar ruled Saturday, July 12, that Saba Masih, 13, and her 10-year-old sister, Aneela, had become Muslims, invalidating their Christian parents’ right to legal guardianship. “He said that because the parents are Christians and because the girls told the court that they adopted Islam, their relationship has ceased,” lawyer Rashid Rehman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said. Under a common interpretation of Islamic law, a Christian cannot have custody of a Muslim. The sisters appeared in a Muzaffargarh District and Sessions court in the company of 16 Muslim men and were given five minutes to testify that their conversion was genuine, human rights activist Ashfaq Fateh said. It was the first t ime that Younis Masih and his wife had seen their daughters since they disappeared on June 26 while traveling to their uncle’s nearby home in Sarwar Shaheed, 150 miles southwest of Lahore. CHINESE HOUSE CHURCH LEADER, WIFE FORCED TO LIVE ON STREETS Sources: Assist News Network, BosNewsLife, Christian Newswire One of China’s most respected house church leaders and his wife remained homeless after authorities expelled them from their home in the Beijing for meeting an American Congressional delegation. Pastor Bike Zhang, chairman of the Federation House Church, and his wife, Xie Fenglan, were reportedly forced to leave their home in Beijing’s Chaoyang District on Sunday, July 6, by officials of the Public Security Bureau (PSB) one of China’s main law enforcement agencies. The couple was initially able to find shelter in the home of a friend, but officials tracked them down and forced them to move into a nearby hotel, reported the China Aid Association (CAA). On Monday, July 14, however, they were ordered to leave the hotel. Both Bike and his wife were forced to live on the streets, unable to find shelter. When asked why the couple was being expelled from Beijing, officials responded, “Because Bike Zhang met the Americans and destroyed the harmony of the Beijing Olympic Games.” In a related development, some 18 American Republican Congressional members have signed a petition for the release of prisoners detained by the Chinese government for religious crimes. Some of the prisoners have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their alleged crimes against society. Update: TORTURED IRANIAN CHRISTIAN FLEES TO TURKEY WITH FAMILY Source: Compass Direct News Days after his release from a month of interrogations and severe torture under secret police custody, Iranian Christian Mohsen Namvar has fled across the border into Turkey with his family. Traveling by train, the badly beaten Christian arrived Wednesday, July 2, in eastern Turkey with his wife and son. Namvar, 44, had been held incommunicado by a branch of Sepah (Iranian Revolutionary Guards) from May 31 until June 26 when authorities told his family they were releasing him “temporarily.” Although the secret police demanded the equivalent of US$43,000 in bail, officers refused to issue a court receipt for the family’s cash payment. At the time of his release, Namvar was experiencing fever, severe back pain, high blood pressure, uncontrollable shaking of his limbs and recurring short-term memory loss. “I have no doubt they wanted to kill me,” he said.
