Pak šli do vesnice a navštívili každý dům, kde žili Dalitové.

Týmy jsme propojili a poslali do jedné oblasti, aby tam intenzívně pracovaly. Tento styl umožňuje lépe navazovat vztahy s místními lidmi. Skupina osmi Američanů a čtyř občanů Ghany v místních školách učila mravouku, navštěvovala domy místních obyvatel, navazovala přátelství, evangelizovala a kázala s využitím příležitostí poskytovaných místními úřady i duchovními.

RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS RUSH AID TO HURRICANES’ VICTIMS

Sources: Christian Post, Assist News Service, Church World Service Hotline, Mission Network News, Religion Today
Hurricane Gustav blustered past New Orleans without the ferocity of Katrina, but left its mark on Louisiana’s southeastern and central coast, according to The Christian Post. Gustav, which came ashore along the U.S. Gulf Coast southwest of New Orleans on Monday, Sept.1, caused less damage than first feared as the levees held, but strong winds and heavy rains caused significant flooding in localized areas.

Relief organizations have begun to distribute food and supplies as evacuees begin to trickle home though many will stay in shelters until damages are assessed and urgent repairs can be made.

“It’s heartbreaking to see people who haven’t been able to afford to finish repairing their homes face another massive storm,” said Audrey Black who directs World Vision’s Storehouse in Picayune, Miss. “People are still living in temporary trailer parks in this area, and there isn’t a sense of normalcy yet. Now families are going through the experience again.”

Almost 780,000 people remain without power. Operation Blessing International reported that its teams and kitchens are operational in Hattisburg, Miss., and Baton Rouge, La., while World Vision is working among evacuated families in Dallas and Jackson by distributing immediate essentials and toiletries. Christian Reformed World Relief Committee has extended its help beyond Louisiana, helping hard-hit Cuba.

Convoy of Hope (COH) is distributing aid to victims from its distribution center in New Iberia, La., and volunteer teams are coming from across the country to assist in this disaster response. Nearly 2 million Gulf Coast residents were evacuated from their homes.

Hurricane Gustav hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, Aug. 26, killing at least 94 people and displacing thousands. In parts of Haiti, torrential rains destroyed livestock, crops and homes, affecting some 2.3 million people already struggling with severe food shortages. Gustav also hit western Cuba, damaging a reported 90,000 homes but causing no deaths.

A week after Gustav hit, Hurricane Hanna left a path of destruction in Haiti on Tuesday, Sept. 2, killing another 136 people. “We’ve already been drenched with Hurricane Gustav, and the land’s already very wet,” said Will White of Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). When Hanna hit, it just dumped more water, and in many areas it caused a lot of flooding.”

MAF flights from Gonaives, one of the hardest hit areas of Haiti inundated by up to 10 feet of water, have been grounded because of flooded airstrips. “We’ve basically been shut down from our normal operations for a couple of days now,” said White. Hurricane Hanna is threatening to strike the Bahamas and the East Coast of the U.S. with two more potential hurricanes in the wings—Ike and Josephine.

MISSIONARIES IN INDIA’S BIHAR STATE FACE HARDSHIPS AMID FLOODING

Source: BosNewsLife
Native Christian missionaries are among the victims in northeastern India’s Bihar state amid reports that hundreds of churches and homes were under water because of devastating floods that have displaced some 3 million people and claimed at least 90 lives. Gospel for Asia (GFA), a major mission group working in the region, said the troubles began last month when a dam broke in the Saptakoshi River in Nepal, leading to massive flooding in neighboring Bihar. “An area the size of Delaware has been inundated,” said GFA President K.P. Yohannan. “We have at least 200 churches and a large number of missionaries in the region that is completely under water. We are still waiting to receive reports about how badly this disaster has affected our work, but I have no doubt that the results will be serious.” Missionaries Mitali Raut and Binod Digal said many in their area are stranded on the roofs of their homes, and that water levels conti nue to rise as the heavy rains pour down. There are concerns about a potential outbreak of waterborne and airborne diseases due to the heat, limited supplies of safe drinking water and poor hygiene. The people of Bihar could also face the loss of thousands of acres of crops. Even after the water recedes, missionaries estimate that many people will be living in relief camps for seven to eight months before they can return to their villages.

700 DALIT VILLAGERS COME TO CHRIST IN 8 YEARS OF MINISTRY

Source: Assist News Service
Eight years ago, Gospel for Asia missionaries Sabal and Medini Chintan felt the Lord’s call to an area of northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state where thousands of Dalits (sometimes referred to as “untouchables”) reside. Wanting to show these people how much Christ loves them, the Chintans immediately began reaching out to the Dalits, but to their surprise, no one would even talk them. Since high-caste people treat Dalits as worthless, this group didn’t think they were worthy to interact with the Chintans. “No one has ever shown love to us like you do,” the ladies told Medini. The Chintans fasted and prayed for three days. Then they went to every house in the village to meet the Dalits who lived there. Medini began to develop friendships with the women. Soon the Chintans were sharing Jesus’ love in a simple way that the villagers could understand. The missionaries also began reaching out to the Dalit children, teaching them the alphabet, good manners and Bible verses, songs and stories. Slowly the Chintans gained the trust of the villagers, and they began attending Sabal’s prayer meetings and home Bible studies. Before long, many of the Dalits turned to Jesus and began witnessing in their area. People from 16 other villages asked Sabal to hold prayer meetings with them as well. As a result, more than 700 Dalits have come to know Christ, and the churches continue to grow.

NEW SOUTHERN BAPTIST PRESIDENT FACES MANY CHALLENGES

Source: Baptist Press
In his first 75 days as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Johnny Hunt has met with more than 500 Southern Baptist leaders, discussing ways to tackle such challenges as declining membership and younger pastors disconnected from the broader fellowship of churches. Hunt said Southern Baptists have been given a wakeup call and a strategy must be hammered out to meet the challenges. “I feel like in the last few years God’s really kind of shaken us to the core. He’s knocked a little bit of the strut out of us,” said Hunt, senior pastor of the 16,000-member First Baptist Church in Woodstock, Ga. “We can think, ‘We’re the largest. We’re this. We’re that,’ but when you read major articles that say things like ‘We have joined the mainline denominations,’ I don’t like that. I don’t like that being said about the group I belong to.” One of Hunt’s priorities has been to consult with leadership at the North American Mission Board about ways to help pastors whose churches haven’t been reporting any baptisms. With International Mission Board leadership, Hunt also hopes to set a clear strategy for helping Southern Baptists share the gospel across North America and worldwide.

NUMBER OF MESSIANIC JEWS IN ISRAEL CONTINUES TO GROW

Source: Assist News Service
“In Israel a resurgence in the number of Jews who believe in Jesus is getting a lot of attention,” said CBN news reporter Wendy Griffith. “Many leaders say it’s the strongest growth since the time of Jesus and that the Messianic movement could be on the brink of a great revival. Although Jesus and the early disciples were Jewish, for nearly 2,000 years the gospel has been viewed as a religion mainly for Gentiles. Even the name Jesus or Yeshua has been a forbidden word among many Jews. But in the last few years, Messianic leaders in Israel say something important is happening.” Israel is home to an estimated 120 congregations with up to 15,000 believers. “That may not sound like many given Israel’s nearly 6 million Jews, but it’s a far cry from 10 years ago when there were only about 3,500 Jewish believers and 80 congregations,” Griffith said. A recent wave of persecution, including the bombing of a youn g Jewish believer, has put Messianic Jews on the front page. “At least we see that believers are being asked to explain who they are, what they believe in, why they are here . . . how they can be Israeli and believe in Jesus and be given an opportunity to tell their story and share their testimony,” said Knut Hoyland of the Caspari Center.

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH TO OUTREACH SUCCEEDS IN GHANA

Source: Mission Network News
Every Child Ministries (ECM) is taking an experimental approach to its outreach this year in Ghana. ECM’s John Rouster says “phenomenal church growth” has prompted the organization to pause because evangelism and discipleship teams were getting spread too thin. “We are putting more intense work into one given area rather than traveling around to several different schools,” he explained. “We combined the teams and brought them together and put them in one area and intensified our approach to this particular area. This approach gives the teams more time to build relationships. The team of eight Americans and four Ghanaians taught character-building lessons in the schools of the area, visited local homes to make new friends and evangelize, and shared the gospel as opportunities arose with local authorities and traditional priests of the area. People responded enthusiastically to the combined discipleship approach. “In Ghana the church is very wide, but the depth of knowledge of the Scriptures and the depth of people in their Christian lives is quite shallow,” Rouster said. “What we’re hoping to do is give more people more depth in their knowledge and in their love of the Lord.”

DONATED WEDDING RINGS HELP FUND WATER PROJECTS IN GHANA

Source: Christian Newswire
High-profile divorces are not uncommon in Orange County, Calif., but if a local charity has its way this fall, wedding rings will be flying off local residents’ fingers for an entirely different reason. Orange County Gives Back is a fund-raising event coordinated by With This Ring to raise money to drill 20 deep water wells in Yendi, Ghana, by year’s end. Founder Ali Eastburn launched the ministry by selling her own wedding ring with proceeds used to dig the first clean-water well in Yendi, a village she had previously visited. Since With This Ring’s establishment in 2007, more than 30 women have donated their wedding rings to assist in the completion of three deep water wells, and several more are planned.

2 CHURCHES AMONG RELIGIOUS PROPERTIES DESTROYED IN TAJIKISTAN

Source: Forum 18 News Service
Worship for religious communities is becoming more difficult in Dushanbe, capital of the Central Asian nation of Tajikistan. Several mosques were demolished in 2007, followed by recent city rebuilding plans in summer 2008 in which a synagogue and a Protestant church were demolished with no compensation. Two other Protestant churches and the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been banned. Now the High Economic Court ruled on Friday, Aug. 29, in the long-running dispute regarding the property of a further Protestant church, Grace Sunmin. But Judge Zulfiyya Yusupova, who had barred international observers from the courtroom, refused to say what the decision was. Authorities want to confiscate the building despite the fact that the church bought the property legally 10 years ago. “For nine years we have been working on this place and renovation still continues,” one church member said. “But now the authorities think the time has come for them to take a ready building away from us.”

UPDATE: CONTINUING VIOLENCE IN INDIA FORCES MORE CHRISTIANS TO FLEE

Sources: Compass Direct News, Assist News Service
Christian victims of Hindu extremist violence who have fled to the capital of India’s eastern state of Orissa said state police have been mere spectators as mayhem continued for nearly two weeks. Attacks on Christians and their property and institutions began in Orissa’s Kandhamal district following the killing of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP) leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his disciples on Saturday, Aug. 23. Maoists claimed responsibility for the murders on Monday, Sept. 1, but the admission did nothing to slow Hindu extremist violence that Christian leaders say has claimed more than 100 lives, destroyed 4,000 houses in 300 villages, and left some 50,000 Christian adults and children hiding in forests. Among those who have fled was Prabodha Kumar, a Catholic priest who said, “My brother has been forced to ‘reconvert’ to Hinduism as he was told that if he did not do so, his house would be destroyed.”

YMCAS CALL FOR ACTION AFTER KILLINGS OF 3 GUATEMALAN VOLUNTEERS

Sources: Ecumenical News International, YMCA
Three young volunteers with the Guatemalan YMCA who were shot dead in August are being remembered by YMCAs worldwide, and the organization is calling for urgent action to investigate the deaths. The bodies of the three volunteers—Eleazar Bernabe Hernández Rodas, 22; Mario René Gámez Luna, 23; and Juan Luis Navarro, 19—were found on Monday, Aug. 11, a day after they were murdered, the World Alliance of YMCAs said in a statement. The Geneva-based Alliance stated that the three volunteers, well known for their work with children and youth in Amatitlán (south of Guatemala City), had been brutally beaten and then killed.
