Například sbor Connexus Community v Barrie ve státě Ontario má shromáždění v místním multikině a k oslovení lidí používá internet a internetové video. Asi 10-15 procent Kanaďanů nyní říká, že jsou evangelikály. Zdroj: Canwest News, Christian Breaking News

CHRISTIAN FATHERING SEMINAR DRAWS 300+ LISTENERS TO RADIO STATION HCJB

Source: HCJB Global
“FamilyLife Today,” a popular U.S.-based radio program that airs on Radio Station HCJB in Quito, Ecuador, received an added boost when more than 300 people attended the station’s recently sponsored seminar on fathering.

The Spanish version of the program is fairly popular in Ecuador, said Doug Weber, HCJB Global Voice’s radio director for Latin America. “We’ve received many good comments from listeners about it, so we wondered whether or not people would come to our station to attend a seminar on the family.”

“FamilyLife Today” is a radio outreach of Campus Crusade for Christ International’s FamilyLife ministry. Weber’s production team handles the Spanish-language translation, production and distribution of the program throughout Latin America.

Initial response to ticket distribution for the event on Friday, May 29, was slow, but organizers were pleased with final attendance figures for the “What Every Father Needs to Know” seminar led by Armando Tamayo of Campus Crusade in Quito.

“He kept the crowd right with him the whole night, and you could just tell that people were soaking up the information,” said Weber. “Armando talked about the importance of being a father to our children. He talked about how our children watch everything we do and learn to do the same things we do--whether good or bad. He also talked about taking time with our kids.”

Weber’s staff holds timely on-air and special events during the year and throughout Ecuador. Live broadcasts from Manta and Ambato featured listeners to HCJB Global Voice’s FM network of stations in the small South American country.

In addition, the station aired special Mother’s Day programming, and one special event featured one of its longest-running programs, “Himnos de la Vida Cristiana” (Hymns of the Christian Life).

“These kinds of special events are one way that we try to give our listeners just a little bit more,” Weber added. “It’s a way that we can touch them a little more closely. It’s also a way that we can highlight other ministries in the community that can help them grow in their faith and relationship with God.”

“Pray for the families of Latin America,” he admonished. As a societal building block, family is emphasized throughout Latin America, but the family unit is under duress. Ecuadorian families face monumental stresses, partly brought on a decade ago when an ongoing financial crisis prompted some 700,000 Ecuadorians to migrate, seeking work in Europe and the U.S. Estimates run as high as 2 million out of 12 million inhabitants, or nearly 20 percent of the population.

“FamilyLife Today” airs daily across Latin America via the ALAS-HCJB satellite network and on 45 HCJB Global affiliate radio stations throughout Latin America.

In addition, an Australian version of the program airs on HCJB Global-Australia’s international shortwave station in Kununurra. The program is supervised by Derek Kickbush and produced by Mark Swinerton. Kickbush and Eric Skattebo also produce a new program called “Marriage and FamilyLife.” All three are former HCJB Global missionaries now serving with Oz FamilyLife in Australia.

CHINESE CHRISTIAN LEADERS MARK 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF TIANANMEN MASSACRE

Source: Christian Newswire
Twenty years after the massacre at Tiananmen Square, Chinese Christian leaders held a solemn assembly at National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., the evening of Thursday, June 4, to pray for a new day of hope and justice for China. They reaffirmed their written manifesto that was signed by more than 226 Chinese Christian leaders. The manifesto calls for forgiveness, repentance, truth, justice and reconciliation in the wake of the 1989 massacre. An estimated 3,000 students were killed in the tragedy with more than 10,000 later executed by the government. The majority of the manifesto’s signatories was directly involved with the student movement and suffered severe repercussions at the hands of authorities. In the aftermath of the massacre, these leaders found salvation and restoration in Christ. “China is at a crossroads,” said Bob Fu, founder of ChinaAid and a former student leader in the Tiananmen Square movement. “We pray in unity that the international community will choose to stand in true solidarity with China’s freedom pursuers without any wavering so that a God-fearing, human rights- and dignity-respecting new China will emerge as a blessing to the whole world in the 21st century.”

TAMIL, SINHALESE CHRISTIANS UNITE TO OVERCOME AFTERMATH OF SRI LANKA WAR

Source: BosNewsLife
At least a quarter of a million civilians, including Christians, remain displaced in Sri Lanka following the government’s final military crackdown on independence-seeking Tamil rebels. But Tamil and Sinhalese Christians have presented a united front, showing how reconciliation is possible amid the crisis. Believers from both ethnic groups are working closely with the Evangelical Alliance United Kingdom and calling on Christians to pray for Sri Lanka and donate to agencies working in the country. Ram Gidoomal of South Asian Concern said the “only encouragement is that God’s people in Sri Lanka” can be seen “working together to respond [crossing] ethnic and religious barriers.” Recently Sri Lankan soldiers killed Velupillai Prabhakaran, the man who founded the Tamil Tigers rebel movement, effectively ending the 26-year war. The fighting cost an estimated 100,000 lives and ravaged parts of the South Asian island nation of 2 0 million.

JOB MARKET FOR MISSIONARIES ‘HAS NEVER BEEN BRIGHTER,’ SAYS MISSIONS LEADER

Source: Christian Newswire
Stories abound about college students graduating into a moribund job market, but a group of 32 college students and recent graduates went another direction to find jobs. They became short-term missionaries. World Gospel Mission (WGM) designed the Volunteers in Action (VIA) program specifically for 20-somethings and college students. The program gives individuals the chance to do what they love while serving on the mission field for six weeks to a year. “The job market for missionaries has never been brighter,” said WGM President Hubert Harriman. “The great thing about WGM is that our staff helps missionaries learn how to raise support from their existing network of friends, family members and such. For college students who are just starting to exercise their call, the VIA program is a perfect fit.” Before heading overseas, VIA participants gather at WGM’s headquarters for a crash course on cultural adaptation, spiritual prepar ation and ministry training. While overseas, the volunteers work with missionaries and nationals, giving the short-term workers a realistic taste of cross-cultural missions. College students can also use their experience for college credit by completing an internship or practicum.

UNLIKELY PAIR OF PRESENTERS SHOW PASSION FOR CHURCH OUTREACH AMID CRITICISMS

Source: Christian Post
Baptist theologian/author John Piper and emerging church pastor Mark Driscoll teamed up this week in North Carolina for an anticipated conference on the “resurgence of the local church.” The unlikely pair has stirred some controversy in conservative circles, with some criticizing respected evangelical preacher Piper for working with the young, emerging Seattle pastor whose raw language and liberal church culture don’t sit well with many conservatives. Among the issues evangelicals have with Driscoll is his language. Although he’s come a long way from the infamous “cussing pastor” label and has repented of it, some are still offended by his explicit talks. Driscoll is theologically conservative and culturally liberal. Ironically, he learned much of the Bible from listening to the sermons from Pastor John MacArthur, one a Driscoll’s major detractors on his sermon series based on the Song of Solomon.

CANADIAN MEDIA CAN’T IGNORE INCREASE OF EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANITY IN CANADA

Sources: Canwest News, Christian Breaking News
With evangelical churches in Canada experiencing double-digit growth, this is becoming a “fascinating part of Canada’s current fabric,” narrator Kevin Newman is quoted as saying on a recent Global TV broadcast. “But the mutual mistrust between journalists and followers has prevented a judgment-free examination. With our current prime minister among those who believe in this new version of church, we need to examine the evangelical movement for what it is--not what secular Canada assumes it is.” Evangelical groups in Canada are emerging in surprising places and with even more surprising numbers. Connexus Community Church in Barrie, Ontario, for example, holds its services in a local multiplex movie theater and uses the Internet and Video on Demand to reach its congregation. Between 10 and 15 percent of Canadians now say they are evangelical.

‘VICAR OF BAGHDAD’ KEEPS FIGHTING FOR RECONCILIATION, PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Sources: Assist News Service, Breaking Christian News
“The reality is that the Middle East does not have just one problem,” said Rev. Andrew White of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East. “Those who think that solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will solve all the problems in the region are very wrong,” added White, affectionately known as the “Vicar of Baghdad.”

“The conflict which caused havoc in Algeria had nothing to do with the Israel-Palestine issue,” he said. “Neither does the conflict here in Iraq. There are many problems in this region, and the problems are not all about land, territory or occupation.”

“Religion has gone very wrong,” White wrote for Lausanne World Pulse. “People are killing others in the belief they are pleasing God. Sadly, many people in the diplomatic political world are scared of religion. They fail to realize the role religion has in much of the world.”

In Iraq, White helped form the High Council of Religious Leaders in Iraq. “Initially, this group was anti-American and anti-coalition,” he added. “After months of meetings, things have changed to the extent that they now say the Americans have given their country back to them. The council also issued its first joint fatwa (decree) that members produced together to decry all violence.”

GLOBAL CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO FREE DEMOCRACY LEADER IN MYANMAR

Sources: Christian Solidarity Worldwide
Christian Solidarity Worldwide has joined efforts with a new website (64forSuu.org), calling for the release in Myanmar (Burma) of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners in the Asian country. Launched with the backing of major celebrities and various nongovernmental organizations, the website is expected to become the global hub of an international campaign for Suu Kyi’s release. The launch coincided with the day that, according to Myanmar’s ruling junta, her house arrest expired. The U.N. has already ruled that her detention is illegal. The website allows visitors to upload videos, text and images and send messages of support for Suu Kyi. The site aims to build awareness of her detention and encourage people worldwide to contact high-profile authorities in Myanmar.

* Broadcasts in the Rawang language, spoken by more than 140,000 people in Myanmar, began airing from HCJB Global-Australia’s shortwave station in Kununurra in 2007. Two half-hour programs in this language air daily--one slot in the morning and one in the afternoon.

JOURNALIST FREED IN IRAN RECANTS CONFESSION, SENSING GOD’S UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Sources: Christian Post, Christian Breaking News
Freelance journalist Roxana Saberi, the young dual Iranian-American citizen who was arrested year in Iran earlier this for spying for the U.S. government and detained in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran for nearly three months, was released on Monday, May 11. She has since returned to the U.S. where she is thanking the many people who aided in her release. Appearing on “Good Morning America,” Saberi said she capitulated to demands by her Iranian interrogators who promised she would go free if she confessed to being a spy. “I felt that God had abandoned me,” said Saberi, noting that her interrogators had even threatened her with execution. “I felt that maybe I did something wrong in my life and I deserved this punishment. I was very afraid, and so I gave in to their pressures during those first two weeks.” But later, “turning to God in prayer,” convinced that He still loved her, she recanted her confession, knowing that the truth might cost her a long prison term and even her life. “I learned many lessons,” Saberi told ABC News. “I learned that, do not fear those who can hurt your body but not your soul. No one can hurt your soul unless you let them. I also learned that, do what you think is right even if you suffer for it. In the end you will be victorious.”

UPDATE: EFFORTS FIZZLE TO TIE MURDERS OF 3 CHRISTIANS IN TURKEY TO ‘MIDDLEMAN’

Source: Compass Direct News
Prosecutors’ efforts to tie the murderers of three Christians in Turkey to state-linked masterminds were set back recently when the alleged ringleader unexpectedly contradicted his previous testimony, implicating a suspected “middleman.” During testimony by Huseyin Yelki, charged with serving as a middleman between the murderers and “deep state” elements, his accuser, Emre Gunaydin, stood and said, “Huseyin Yelki is not guilty, he’s being held in prison for no reason.” Frozen by Gunaydin’s statement, the prosecuting team and judges at the Malatya Third Criminal Court then demanded to know why he had previously implicated Yelki. Gunaydin said he did so because Yelki was a Christian missionary. Gunaydin’s retraction of an earlier statement implicating Yelki raised suspicion among the judges that those behind the murders pressured him to change his statement. The judges requested a list of everyone w ho had visited Gunaydin and the other four murder suspects in prison. Yelki, a former volunteer at Zirve Publishing Co., was taken into custody in February on suspicion that he had incited the five young suspects to kill the three Christians in April 2007.
